(I'm aware TT 91 is out. I haven't gotten around to it yet.)
This wasn’t a good issue. I’m just going to go over the things that bothered me in order.
First, we get a splash page of some chick from Pakistan making light with her hand. There’s nothing wrong with her part of the story (presumably, she’ll be a more major character later) but it wasn’t splash panel worthy. DC comics these days could cram a lot more story into them if they stopped putting splash panels where they don’t belong. Take a cue from Walking Dead. There’s a splash panel almost every issue and I’ve never been annoyed with it. This is because Kirkman makes sure that whatever he puts in his splash panel is shocking or important, not just a picture of some kid we don’t know doing something we don’t care able.
Next we get Wonder Girl and Raven “literally combing the internet.” The word you were looking for is figuratively. Wonder Girl is smarter than that. I wishEric Wallace JT Krul was. Also, the facial recognition software made me roll my eyes and when Wonder Girl talked about “social networking,” it made me cringe. Teenagers don’t talk like that. The only time you hear a teenager talk about social networking is when they’re talking about that movie with Jesse Eisenberg.
Then we jump to Robin and Ravager. I’m getting pretty tired of Damien already. I hear he’s likeable in Batman and Robin but he’s a total brat in this book. He thinks the streets of Gotham are more dangerous than the bad guys the Titans face? Batman’s entire rogues gallery could line up against a Titans bad guy like Mammoth and the single Titans bad guy is still gonna stomp all the crazies. Plus, as the guy who screwed things up last issue, Damien should really lose the attitude. He’s like Danny Chase all over again.
The story moves on to Beast Boy and Superboy. There’s nothing wrong with this exchange but I’ll use it as an excuse to complain about how silly Beast Boy looks.
I get that Johns pushed to make Gar look more like his animated self but he just looks ridiculous with that one tooth hanging out of his mouth and those elf ears. Remember when Beast Boy looked like a normal guy with green skin? Oh well.
Kid Flash shows up, having found Barney’s yearbook picture and the Teen Titans race off to a local High School to find Barney…which begs the question of why the Titans aren’t in class. I mean, I know superhero stuff takes priority sometimes and most of the team has an even better reason to not be in school but Connor and Cassie at least should be in class. They’re teenagers with responsible parents. Maybe I’ve missed something from not reading their solo books.
The rest of the story is okay. There’s nothing great here but nothing awful, either. That was good enough to earn the first issue of this run three stars in my book but by the third issue, I expected things to pick up a bit. This whole thing just feels like the kinda story Marv Wolfman and George Perez could have told better in one issue.
^Here’s the bully and prom queen standing around in odd poses. Bully does not seem to mind being shoved into lockers that much. I’m not even sure what’s happening in the bottom panel. I guess he’s trying to backhand her without touching her…while spreading his fingers apart.
The Pros: Kid Flash looks really cool most of the time. We might get a Pakistani Titan.
The Cons: Bad dialogue, boring villains, Damien Wayne, Beast Boy looks goofy, questionable plot developments.
