Silver Surfer #1
Title: "Devolution"
Release Date: 2/16/2011
Writer: Greg Pak
Penciler: Steven Segovia
Inker: Victor Olazaba
Colorist: Wil Quintana
This is the first solo Surfer comic I've bought since 1991. The previews looked good so I thought I'd give it a shot.
To begin we get the Surfer's back history and his sacrifice in becoming the herald of Galactus to save his home planet of Zenn-La. We get a nice glance inside the mind of Norrin Radd and the burden placed upon him in finding new worlds for Galactus to devour.
300 miles above the Earth the Surfer contemplates that Chaos War was the 33rd time he had stood with Earth's heroes to save the universe. He flashes back on several times when he rebelled against his duties but is always reclaimed by them.
Today his goal is to save his master Galactus who has exhausted his energy reserves in the battle against the Chaos King during Chaos War. To do this he assists Galactus in absorbing energy from the Earth's sun and thereby shortening its lifespan by one billion years. The Surfer again contemplates on why his actions have caused him no emotional duress and he slowly drifts back to Earth. Observing many of Earth's champions he says that wiping away Earth's conflicts would be simple for someone with power such as his but his loyalties lie with Galactus.
Taking a rest in the Rio Grande Valley Norrin observes a man and woman meeting and embracing. But suddenly they're approached by a group of armored warriors who want a bag the woman is carrying. The soldiers open fire and the Surfer intervenes and easily neutralizes them.
Moving our story to Mexico City we see the woman Suzie Endo, formerly known as the Cybermancer. Her position as the Sci-Op of American states leads her to investigate the Surfer's presence on Earth and his interaction with the soldiers from earlier. Apparently the soldiers are associates of her employers and Suzie's job is to be the first person to establish contact with the Surfer. After watching the Surfer heal the female who was shot earlier she marvels at just a glimmer of the Power Cosmic. The woman's acquaintance Angel isn't that lucky and its too late for the Surfer to save him.
At this moment the surfer is attacked by none other than the High Evolutionary Herbert Wyndham. Snaring Norrin with several tentacle like objects he begins a process on the surfer who breaks free quite easily or so it seems. After easily knocking away the High Evolutionary Norrin unexpectedly loses control of his board. Unexpectedly the Surfer's hand appears to be bleeding and for the first time in eons he feels pain.
In this moment of weakness the armored soldiers again open fire on the Surfer. Shocked at the bullets going through his board the Surfer is again amazed that he actually feels the bullets. As we close the Surfer has several gunshot wounds and appears to be devolving into Norrin Radd.
3.5/5
For a very good first issue that definitely has me wanting to see where this story goes. I'm by far not an expert on the Surfer but this was a good first issue.
