Amazing Spider-Man 654.1
"Flashpoint"
Release Date 2/16/2011
Writer: Dan Slott
Pencils: Humberto Ramos
Our story begins in Madripoor with the all new Spider-M...errr Venom, Flash Thompson infiltrating Futura Plaza which according to the handy dandy dialogue box is the 3rd tallest building in the Pacific rim.
We overhear Flash communicating with his superior officer Kate and he asks again why he can't be called Spider-Man. She reiterates when he's in the suit his name is Venom and when under cover his name is Gene Heisman. He easily transforms the symbiote into a James Bond style tuxedo and meets up with Kate who's sporting a lovely evening gown.
Their mission is to mingle at a party that's being attended by many of the world's biggest financial linchpins. Their main target is Countess Bianca Demonico who they suspect is associated with the terrorist cell ULTIMATUM. Their goal is to tag her so they can track her back to ULTIMATUM headquarters and locate their leader Flag Smasher.
Flash & Kate mingle at the party and meet Yusef Kassim, banker to the Middle East's largest oil company. After this quick introduction their target the Countess interjects wishing to introduce herself to "Gene Heisman". Rather than talking Flash wishes to share a dance with the lovely Countess and successfully implants her with a tracking chip.
Returning to base Flash's superiors are quite satisfied with his progress but the General's dog is freaking out due to the symbiote. After being separated the dog calms down and Flash is cleared for 19 more missions.
Back home in Brooklyn, Flash is already wondering where his next mission is going to be. (Foreshadowing for a future addiction to his newfound symbiote?) Betty Brant arrives and tells him the news about the death of Jonah's wife. She tells him that Peter Parker is taking the news much worse than anyone else and Flash takes off to talk to his friend. He tracks Peter down to a coffee shop and discovers him talking to his ex Mary Jane. Flash seems a little upset by this but before he can talk to Peter he's summoned for his next mission.
The symbiote's tracking device (Venom tracers?) has led them to Uzbekistan and Flash is being transported there aboard a F-119 Sky Spider aircraft. We learn that Hassim has been kidnapped and it's Flash's goal to locate and extract him and then get the suit off. Due to the stealth shielding on the jet his communicator might not be working properly.
Flash parachutes down to ULTIMATUM's hq and easily dispatches several of their guards. One of the guards manages to inform Flag smasher that they've been breached and he takes off to confront the attacker. This gives Flash a chance to free Hassim and their spotted by another group of guards. Flag Smasher uses a hi-tech explosive that actually manages to blow off Flash's symbiotic legs. This traumatic incident sparks a transformation and we finally see Flash "Venom out" into a huge version similar to Mac Gargan.
He tears through several of the guards until Flag Smasher informs him he's holding a device that will cause Hassim's shackles to explode. (Hassim is understandably terrified at what he's seen unfold.) Flash takes a second to digest this information and comes up with a foolproof plan; bite off Flag Smasher's right arm. Poor Hassim is dismayed as he calls Flash a cannibal. Flash says it didn't count because he didn't swallow.
North of the ULTIMATUM base and Flash (back to normal) and Hassim meet up with Kate. Kate is a little concerned and asks Flash about him "Venoming out" since they lost communication. Flash doesn't speak until Hassim says he saw nothing less than a true hero who saved his life.
Back at Project Rebirth HQ and Flash's superiors analyze the symbiote saying there's only 99% of it in the holding tank. They discuss if Hassim is telling the truth and ask Flash if he's up for 18 more missions. He says he is and says "see ya around partner". Kate replies but the General says he doesn't think Flash was talking to her.
Back at his apartment and Betty Brant is waiting for him. She asks why he missed Marlo's funeral and he says the VA sent him away on last minute business. He also apologizes for not talking to Peter as the story ends. We see Flash holding Betty with an ominous silhouette of Venom behind them.
Just an awesome issue and I can't wait for his solo series. I might be jumping the gun but I'm going with the full monty here.
