He hasn't been penciling for a while, but he has been writing and inking. Oh hold up, flippin' through some of these comics I see his name pop up on occasion. Yeah, but it's mostly been Whilce Portacio. From what I read though on issue 200, he's gonna do everything. Inks, pencils, colors, and of course story.

He's done the majority of the art on Spawn for a while in the past I believe.

Yeah, I know I'm probably the only one who bothers keeping up with Spawn, but what can I say? I've been enjoying it. Anyway, issue 200 came out, and it's pretty darn cool.

I haven't read Spawn in a long time, but he is definitely an awesome character. I wish a proper Spawn movie would be made, but the way Todd McFarlane wants to do it sounds like the opposite of a good idea.

Meh, whether a movie gets made or not wouldn't really matter to me. Right now, I feel about it the same way I feel about a Witchblade movie--not happenin' for quite a while if ever.
So like I said, issue 200 was just great. If anyone's thinkin' of jumpin' on Spawn, now would be the time to do it. 200, really set up some groundbreaking framework for things to come. Malebogia may be returning, Al's officially handed over the mantle to Jim, we finally have an idea of what the Omega Spawn is, and things are about to get cosmic level big. Man, I'm so amped up for the next issue, I feel like goin' back and re-reading through everything from issue 1, just to get me back into that Spawn hype I was in so many years ago.

Now that is definitely a yes. After Al Simmons got threw restarting the universe with his divine powers an' junk, he got fed up with the how he was living. And then we get into Endgame. It's a great place to jump on if you're lookin' to see what happened after all that, and it takes the series in a new direction. So yeah, I definitely recommend it.

Oh shoot, doesn't look like it. Wonder why they skipped it. The stories really didn't carry over into anything important, but that arc was an interesting read. All I can say is try and see if you can find the single issues of it, or skip it.

I'm caught up on pretty much all things Spawn, aside from the last two issues. It's been really good. The entire structure of the story is very good. I look back at some of the older issues of Spawn, and while a lot of the magic is still there, there's a lot more stuff to the newer issues that make me enjoy it a lot more. As a character, I like how Jim is developing/falling into the role of Spawn a lot better than Al did in his early days. The supporting cast of Jim's few friends, is good, but even better are the relationships between the demons an' junk. It's still the same formula that made Spawn good, but it's applied much better here.

The new Spawn style is actually pretty great, I'm very suprised with the new narration style and to see that they went and tried to develop something new in the Spawn universe. Its a very good read even if you have basic knowledge on the character as I do, gotta love when things work in comics.

I'd like to someday read all of Spawn (I've read some in the past), or at least to issue #100, but that will take a while, and I don't anticipate that happening anytime soon.

Quite honestly, if I were giving a recommendation between new and old, I'd say you'd be better off reading the newer stuff over the older stuff. Better quality overall.
That said, Spawn is Spawn. It's had its really good moments, and its had its less than spectacular moments too.
Reading up to issue 100 is alright, and that would be a good cutting off point. Doing what Crom did and reading up to the end of the Apocalypse stuff would probably give you a better ending point, because that worked out pretty well as the final thing for a while, and most of the issues after that seemed more like lingering on the thought of "what should we do now?" Then when the Endgame stuff started, things picked up for the better.
In any case, it's up to 213 now, and still running strong, perhaps in the best place it's been throughout its entire run. I find it interesting that to the average comic book fan, Spawn was always that 90's comic book BA kinda guy and hasn't been anything more than that. A lot of people still don't even know that the issues still come out regularly. Granted with Image, keeping things printed out on time is something they've never really gotten the hang of. Either way, I still feel obligated as a fan I guess to let people know it's still out there and if you liked it before, you'll like it even more now. Maybe when I finally get to work on that Jim Downing respect thread, the Ledgerites can spread the word to other former Spawn fans.

Spawn was massively popular during the 90's. I'm talking like one of the highest selling comics every month popular (according to sales figures on another site). But like the rest of Image and the comic book industry in general, it took a big dive towards the end of the 90's. To many nowadays, Spawn (with just about every other character created at that time) is precisely what you described; that Image created 90's character whose days have passed. They represented an era, and aren't very applicable to today's comic book readers or people in general. It is unfortunate because Spawn is a great character (from what I've read) and he gets lumped in with the other sub par characters it seems.
I do think Image got a bad rep for being late with their comics. My father has told me several times that when he was still collecting some comics in the 90's (mostly Image comics, especially 'Pitt'), they would not be on time. He has said that Pitt (Dale Keown) would often come months late, and they would be so short sometimes he would be done with them in minutes. I don't personally know how often or how bad it was, and if all of their titles were affected by tardiness, but that isn't a good thing if you want to keep readers.

Speaking as someone who read Pitt and experienced the abortion that was it's publishing record. Yes it was really that bad Pitt was often 3-6 months late and when it did came out, the result was not up to the worth of the wait. Pitt wasn't that bad for a comic that had all of the 90's syndrome, but jesus-christ was it terrible a following a schedule. Image isn't even close to as bad on their publishing schedule now, it has improved. But they do have a tendency to tardiness that doesn't help them. However it's kinda hard to be avoided given how Image works. The real reason why so many Image comic characters went into obscurity frankly is because they were crap that was put together in a slap shod fashion without any depth and they were all similar. Those that survived either did because they managed to garner an irreductible fan base that keeps it alive, or managed to evolved something worth the read. In either case Image is the better now for those lousy characters fading away.

Frankly, current Spawn is a good comic that doesn't deserve to be reduced to some decadeish reasoning. It reads like a good Brubaker story, with a solid and enjoyable supernatural twist and that links to one of the classic comic characters without rebooting nor using classic comic devices to relaunch characters. This is in character and well done, very easy to start reading too.
