News Update (5th November)
This morning, EON Productions, MGM and Sony Pictures announced the start of production for the 23rd James Bond movie, Skyfall. You can still replay our live blog from the press conference and we now also have the full press release.
Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli today presented the cast of the 23rd James Bond adventure, entitled SKYFALL. The film, from Albert R. Broccoli's Eon Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, and Sony Pictures Entertainment, is directed by Academy Award® winner Sam Mendes and stars Daniel Craig, who returns for his third film as James Bond 007. The screenplay is written by Neal Purvis & Robert Wade and John Logan. SKYFALL, which goes into production on Monday, November 7th, will begin its worldwide roll-out in the UK and Ireland on October 26th 2012 and in North America on November 9th 2012.
Joining Michael G. Wilson, Barbara Broccoli and Director Sam Mendes were members of the cast of SKYFALL, including: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Dame Judi Dench, Naomie Harris and Berenice Marlohe. The filmmakers also announced Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney and Ben Whishaw.
In SKYFALL, Bond's loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.
"We're so delighted to have Sam Mendes direct SKYFALL and be working once again with Daniel Craig. We've a great script, an extraordinary cast and an incredibly talented creative team for this latest James Bond adventure," said Wilson and Broccoli.
The Director of Photography is Roger Deakins, a nine-time Oscar® nominee who previously shot the films Jarhead and Revolutionary Road for Mendes. The Production Designer is Oscar® winner Dennis Gassner, who previously designed Quantum of Solace and collaborated with Mendes on the films Road to Perdition and Jarhead. The Editor is Stuart Baird, A.C.E., whose many credits include Casino Royale. Jany Temime, whose many credits include the Harry Potter series, In Bruges, and Children of Men, is the Costume Designer. Action specialist Alexander Witt is the 2nd Unit Director. Gary Powell is Stunt Co-ordinator, Chris Corbould is SFX Supervisor and Steve Begg is Visual Effects Supervisor, all of whom have worked on previous Bond films.
Judi Dench, set to reprise her role of M, revealed to The Express that Sam Mendes' production of the as-of-yet-untitled 23rd James Bond film is set for production later this year.
"I am going to do the next Bond in November," she says, "I don't know the location yet but hopefully it will be somewhere nice. I can't tell you much more but I do enjoy playing M as she is such a strong character. I like being bossy and my grandson thinks its cool that I'm in Bond."
Depending on the size of her part, Dench's involvement in the film could fall anytime during the production, so cameras could theoretically begin to roll even sooner, though November should serve as a safe ballpark start date until a more exact shooting schedule can be confirmed.
Mendes will work with a script from Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan, eyeing a November 9, 2012 release.
The mystery of who Naomie Harris will (most probably) be playing in Sam Mendes‘ upcoming Bond 23 has been solved, and it seems she will be taking up the role of Miss Jane Moneypenny.
Bond fans* will know that Moneypenny is the secretary to M and an officer in the Navy and, in previous films at least, subject to being caught up in great sexual tension whenever Bond is around.
This casting is according to Baz Bamigboye at The Daily Mail, who has a pretty rick solid record on such business. Interesting, then, that he just mentions in passing that Ralph Fiennes and Javier Bardem are to also appear in the film.
Both have been rumoured for some time, and most sources have Bardem tagged for a villain’s role. So Bond has his eternal, unconsummated flirt interest, his new villain and… some other bloke all lined up ready.
No mention of Simon Russell Beale, however, which is possibly bad news for fans of the actor. He’s currently about the most exciting thing in UK theatre, and it seemed like a no brainer for his friend Mendes to cast him in Bond somewhere. Who know. Maybe Bamigboye just left him off the list as he’s not “tabloid famous” enough.
