The Walking Dead 083
Robert Kirkman - Creator/Story
Charlie Adlard - Art
Cliff Rathburn - Colors
Let me just say that this series is among my absolute favorite series to read. Not just currently but ever. It is so incredibly well written and the fact that it has had the same writer on the series since its creation is one of the reasons why.
I think that what we have lost for the most part with comics is consistent writers. Comic book juggernauts like DC and Marvel often swap writers around almost between every story (more than a slight exaggeration) and while it brings fresh ideas to a character(s) for a series, it also provides massive character derailment on occasion.
Some of my favorite series had one or two writers on them throughout the run. But getting back to the issue at hand, The Walking Dead 083 has the ideas for the series completely covered.
To give you a little back story for the issue, the survivors of the series had come upon a quiet little community that is relatively safe from the zombies that are literally everywhere else in the world. But one group of bad people tried to get in and the resulting gunfire from that fight caused massive amounts of zombies to surround and even breach the defensive walls of the community.
Now we are on our issue where Rick is trying to get his son and the people with him out of the town and then come up with a plan to get the others. He comes up with the previously successful idea of rubbing zombie guts all over his party. Well Rick did not count on children being able to keep their cool and the idea quickly goes to pot in a bad way.
We see a lot of people die in this issue and a real shocker injury for me. I have to say, that I never saw this coming. I will not spoil it for you Ledgers. It is a must read.
The art is the same as it has almost always been. So not really glamorous art but I would not have any other artist for this series.
Overall I was mostly pleased with this issue. I really did not like the shocker injury. I would have preferred that this unnamed person go physically unharmed. But I cannot say it happened in an unrealistic way at all. I felt this issue just cleared 9 out of 10 for me because of that. A must read but a little unsatisfying.
