New Avengers #9 Writer:Brian Michael Bendis Artist: Mike Deodato, Jr. Artist: Howard Chaykin This story splinters into two plot lines. The first part focuses on the New Avengers looking to take down Superia and a splinter cell of HAMMER in the present day Marvel Universe. The 2nd half focuses on Nick Fury tracking down some Nazi war criminals in Cuba in the year 1959 and being recruited for a project called Avengers Initiative. Fury Thoughts: The Avengers in the present get plenty of action and I mean all 9 of them. Everyone gets to do their thing and Deodato makes it a pleasure to see on paper. He's one of my favorite artists and nevr disappoints. However, the 1950s throwback art leaves a bit to be desired IMO. There's not much going on with Nick's mission in the past besides tracking down the Nazis. He handles them quickly like a SHIELD agent should. He does get to display some of his fighting skills. It's weird seeing Dr. Strange as a member of an Avengers team thats taking on threats like these. He uses some basic spells to take on the bad guys and just feels kind of out of place on this team. One thing I did like was every time he uses a spell we get it written on page and the book of magic it's from. Another thing I liked was an Avenger was actually critically injured in battle. I've seen countless issues where they take on what seems like a bazillion bad guys and never get tagged by a bullet or other object. I thought it was a nice touch and very realistic. There were a few funny moments like Iron Fist telling Luke & Jessica that he's never had a driver's license. Which makes sense since he's lived in New York and the hidden city of K'un Lun for most of his life. Overall, I'm not a big fan of Bendis but this was pretty decent. I definitely want to see what's going on and how the past and present events tie together. 6/10

Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Artists: Howard Chaykin & Mike Deodato As the New Avengers battle Superia & HAMMER in the present, Nick Fury has assembled his Avengers team in 1959 and it consists of Sabretooth, Kraven, Namora, Silver Sable (current one's father), Ulysses Bloodstone & Dominic Fortune. They've been brought together to tackle a Nazi scheme that includes their own super soldier version of Captain America and the Red Skull. Back in the present, one of the Avengers has suffered a serious injury and things don't look good. They also begin to wonder if someone is pulling their strings because the situation with HAMMER reeks of a set up. Fury Thoughts: The two ongoing stories here haven't begun to show any signs of how they're going to end up being involved together. After 4 issues it's a bit frustrating as a reader. The last issue was especially frustrating because the present day Avengers were only involved in basically a 1/4 of the book. The art by Chaykin for the 1950s scenes is starting to grow on me. If things don't start coming together in the next issue then I'm going to be disappointed in this story. With that being said, the 1950s Avengers team has combined some interesting characters that you won't see together very often. The Avengers team in the present is written pretty well in their limited showings in the arc. 5.5/10 This series needs to start giving the readers some answers. It's been 4 issues and it needs a strong finish to save it. I'm hoping it lasts 6 issues with a strong 5th & 6th issue to explain the correlation between the past and present. Wait for the trade if you're not already reading it.

This whole arc is feeling dragged-out to me. I REALLY hope the payoff is worth it. Tell us something already!!!

I'm not ready to give up on it just yet, but much more of this and I'll be approaching that area.
Also, I think the flashback scenes are well written, but I really don't care for Chaykin's art.

SPOILERS ARE IN THIS REVIEW!!!!! ******************************** New Avengers #13 Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Artists: Mike Deodato, Jr & Howard Chaykin This issue is the finale of the arc involving the New Avengers/Victoria Hand/HAMMER in the present day Marvel U and Nick Fury's team of Avengers in the 1950s. We finally see the connection between the two stories as Nick Fury discovers what the Nazis were using to create their own super soldiers in the 1950s. It's also the same thing that Superia and HAMMER were in control of in the present. The big reveal was expected but it also leaves the possibility open for future stories. In case you're dying to know its the Infinity Formula and we see the New Avengers use it to save Mockingbird's life. The story itself felt like it was dragging somewhat, but this final issue closed nicely and leaves the possibility open for future stories. I'm eager to see the affects that the formula is going to have on Bobbi. The future for Superia has me interested as well since I don't think Marvel has many major female villains. Also, where Victoria Hand's loyalties lie has me in Dark Avengers. As always Deodato's artwork is phenomenal and I love the way he draws. I felt like most of the team members got a pretty equal amount of face time as well. Overall, I'd go with a 6.5 for the issue and probably 6/10 for the entire arc. It's good but not a must read story.

I just read it as well. I too am very curious to see what the effect of the infinity formula will have on Bobbi. This was definitely the best issue of this arc. I agree with your overall rating of the arc being a 6, but I think this issue itself is probably closer to a 7 or 8 for me. Bendis' dialogue was excellent, Deodato's art was outstanding, all the key players had decent face-time and we are left wondering where Victoria's true allegiances lie. All-in-all a very nice closing piece to the story. Looking forward to seeing where everything goes from here.
