Today I got to do an exclusive written interview with writer Mike Federali for his upcoming title: The Baku, a horror western fantasy.
Okay. To kick things off, tell us about the Baku. What is it about?
The Baku is a Horror Western Fantasy that takes place in 1800s California. It's the story of the Baku, a man who has the power to eat devils, demons and ghosts!
Can you tell us a little about the main character? What drives him? What makes
him an interesting character other than his unique powers?
The Baku is an orphan raised by Chinese railroad workers. His purpose is to fight all the evil he encounters, and he encounters a LOT. What makes him unique is his ability to stay positive despite the impossible task set on him. He could just give up, but he never does.
Who are you working with on this project?
The artwork is by the incredible Drew Moss. www.drewmossart.com
How long have you been in the comic book business?
A little over a year actually. But I don't know that I'm actually "in" the business. Mostly I'm in my own little corner of the creator community doing my own thing right now.
How will people be able to pick up this series?
Mostly online and in selective stores. The easiest way would be www.thebaku.net
On Kickstarter you are taking pledges for about 2 more weeks and are giving
perks for pledges. Tell us about those. What kind of things can you get for a
pledge?
Oh there are SO many. Signed copies, limited edition covers, posters, t-shirts, sketches, cameos in the book and more! Anyone who's ever wanted to get involved with a book from the ground floor and support two independent creators should really give it a look.
What characters do you love from other series?
The Baku, of course. And there's also a rabbit I like. A minor character but just something I enjoyed writing.
If you had a chance to write for a mainstream character, who would it be and
why?
Hm. That's a tough one. I suppose I would have to say whoever I could tell the best story with. I've got a few sitting around for a certain friendly neighborhood hero I'd love to talk to the House of Ideas about.
What are your goals as a writer? What makes you want to write comics?
Good questions. Yikes. My goal as a writer is to tell a story you've never heard. Or at least tell it in a new way. And I want to write comics because it's such a direct person-to-person interaction. In a way it's almost like the lost art of writing a letter. I'm saying something and I'm sending it directly for YOU. You then take it in your hands and hopefully my message gets through. That's a good answer right? Better than, I like to see heroes punch things.
Are there any plans to work with other writers and artists on future projects?
Sure. I have a number of projects in the works each with a different artist or team. It's nice to try different things with different teams. In the next few months I'll be working on two other comics each with a different artist. And I will still continue to work with Drew on anything new.
I also saw that you have 2 albums on iTunes. I have to say, you are quite good.
My personal favorites are Never Be Lonely, Be My Dulcinea, Someday and Vanished
Cage. What is your inspiration for your songs?
Writing songs is a little different than writing comics. I don't have as much time to get the story across. I keep it simple and direct in my songs. And I'm inspired mostly by things from my own life. Personal Relationships. Hardships. Anything ending with ship really. Spaceships...
Who are your favorite musical artists?
I love The Beatles, Pixies, Prince, The Clash, Otis Redding and anything Motown. Lately I've been on a Tom Petty, Buddy Holly and Hank Williams kick.
The Baku seems really interesting. In closing, is there a preview available for
The Baku that readers can check out?
Indeed there is. I'll send it to you for the site!
Thanks for spending a little time with us today Federali and good luck.
Thanks for having me!
