MGM has decided they are pushing forward with their remake of Paul Verhoeven's Robocop! Joshua Zetumer (Infiltrator) is penning the new script. David Self was writing the script but he was switched out for Zetumer when Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, The Wrestler) was still the director but at the time, the project fell apart due to financial troubles on MGM's part. Once MGM got back on their feet, Aronofsky was committed to The Wolverine. Jose Padilha (Bus 174, Elite Squad) is set to direct the remake and MGM has intentions to make this a major franchise. Now it seems that they are looking for A-List actors to fill the bionic shoes! Killerfilm reports that MGM is looking at Johnny Depp, Keanu Reeves, or Tom Cruise for the role of the cyborg sentinel, Alex Murphy. Their hopes are to bring in more viewers with the A-List star but most of the time, Murphy will be shrouded under a metal helmet so the intention might be lost.  What do you think Ledgers? Good? Bad? How do you feel about this news? |

The idea is dated, but on top of that..... REMAKES ALMOST ALWAYS SUCK IN THE FIRST PLACE.

I remember watching the series when I was kid but I don't think this will be good. I agree that it is a dated idea and that remakes almost always suck.

Even with Depp or Cruise, actors with a lot of range, leading the movie?
Imagine if you will, Captain Jack Sparrow bumbling about in metal armor, reading someone their rights in slurred speech after gunning them down with an automatic sidearm.

I thought the first movie was pretty good but never saw the follow-ups. I'll hold off on passing any judgement until we hear more.

Not as good as the first story-wise but more action. The third.... well I am still convinced it was a fan-made movie with how bad it was. |

I hope the movie does get made though. MGM needs the funds from a good movie to keep it going. Robocop might be able to be adapted to something that can work. We are beyond the cyberpunk style that is Robocop's universe but it could still work. I would hate for the movie possibility end up like.....  |

They could make this work if they play the story right.
Perhaps more of a realistic "suit", less cyberpunk...more Iron Man. This could be pulled off my getting those who like shiny suits and lasers who tailed Iron Man like a god to come back into the movies.
But, I myself, shall not see it.
