Now this is not a thread where every thinks of good names for super heroes/villains , tis one where we look at why and how they got there names.
I have thought about it and narrowed down to a few catigories for why a superhero or vaillain is named what he/she is , they can often fall under more than one bracket though.
1.Descriptive Descriptive names are the most obvious the describe either what the character does or what the characters looks like or what the characters powers are like , examples include - Spiderman (powers of a spider), Electro (electrical powers coupled with dressed as a spark), Beast (...looks like a beast),Storm(obvious) and The Avengers (this is one to show what they do...avenge , even if they dont do it thats why there name is the avengers...presumably), Captain America (dressed as a flag)
2.In keeping with a Motif This is a popular type where by a hero or villain's name is apparent to keep with there motif , such as Batman (his whole bat costume , scared of bats , lair full of bats) or the Riddler (loves riddler , dressed as a question mark and has a whole riddle motive) Captain America (Fights to keep justice in America , A patriot and all round perfect American)
3.It sounds cool This is a very frequent one , whereby a hero or villain has a name , purely/mainly because it sounds cool .These ones often dont have any real connotations to the superheroes motive or the way they look , its usually because it sounds awesome, examples - Nightwing (What has he got to do with this other than going out at night )
Can anyone think of other reasons why ?
i will be making another on How they gained these names.
constructive critizism welcome , this is my first proper article.

Well Dick chose Nightwing because he was told of a story from Superman about a group of people called Nightwing and Flamebird on Krypton or saved people and such. So he adopted the name.

They usually pick something that's of relevance to them. Or in Superman's case what people or Lois thought the 'S' might stand for. When, on Krypton it meant, hope.

Bruce chose Batman because he was afraid of bats, and he wanted criminals to fear him the way that he did with bats. So bats was relevant to him.
The hard one will be to find a character that just picks a name randomly.

The hard one will be to find a character that just picks a name randomly. Mostly they fall under more than one bracket , Bane ? because he's the death of people presumably but id say its more so to intimadate people

I think that might that might have been explained in Vengeance of Bane. I haven't read them in a long while. But your reason seems more than acceptable.

Eddie picked Venom because of the things going on in his life ("Forced to spew venomous tabloid drivel!") ... does that count as any of your three?

I thought he chose Nightwing because he goes out at night with Batman and is Bruce's wing man when picking up the ladies. :s

It could fall uner desciptive(describing his secret identity life) I guess , but if i had to , i would put an "others" category for reasons such as this that aren't widespread enough to obtain a category in themselves due to only being a singular or very few examples.

Superheroes get 'superhero names' for a reason very well outlined by Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins. One of the main points of being a hero (or a villian) is to inspire people. Whether you are trying to inspire them to hope or to despair, you have to be noticable about it. Nobody is going to be shocked into fear by a supervillian named Dave. Nobody is going to feel hopefull when the superhero Kevin flies overhead. Having a name that normal people has tells the public that they are just normal people too. But as Bruce Wayne was saying to Alfred, to be truly inspiring you have to be more than just a person. You have to be a symbol. Superheroes and supervillians choose names as they do because they want to be recognized as a symbol instead of another normal person.
