Hmm, so if written optimally, J'onn would basically be incapable of losing to anyone within reason. Such is the problem with characters like that though.
Does he job or is he at least respectable in most of his fights?

He can still be taken out by people faster than him.
A little of both. I'd say he jobs more though.

Alright I've got a question(s) about J'onn. More specifically his intangibility. I have seen people bring this up all the time in his battles as basically a fail safe argument, and it just seems like something is not right about it. Also, I would like to understand it more since I don't follow him. 1) What stops Jonn from constantly fighting in an intangible state? (assuming he can still harm his opponent with his eye beams and telepathy). Plot? Plot. He can and has used intangibility in conjunction with other abilities. He has used heat vision and intangibility before on several occasions and has once used invisibility, intangibility, and telepathy simultaneously. No, but neither can most of DC's other heavyweights, like SuperMan or Wonder Woman. He was harmed by Kanto's sword while intangible. Kanto attributed this to his sword operating on a multidimensional plane. Fairly often. Not really. He has phased through matter, physical blows, energy attacks, explosions, attacks that would otherwise freeze him, etc.

Thanks for the info Silver.
IMO It seems like it would be more interesting if his intangibility had say...a certain time limit or limitations and he basically used it as a fail safe or something. Maybe it causes him pain or he morally he doesn't like to use it or something. It would at least prevent questions like mine if you know why he doesn't use it all the time.

ckal: The same could be said about any character with intangibility. This is not unique to the Martian. The reason that some characters, such as Thor or Captain Atom for instance, can attack intangible opponents is because intangibility is basically a failsafe to virtually every form of physically damaging attack.

Yeah I get it, I just think intangibility in general could be more interesting if there were some kind of limitations placed on it. I didn't mean to solely include the Martian Manhunter.

J'ohn is one of the coolest characters in comics and one of my personal favorites. I almost cried when reading Final Crisis: Requiem. If someone can and should inherit the character after brightest day is over it should be Tomasi. Tomasi was the editor of the nineties ongoing, the writer of Final Crisis: Requiem and the writer of the Martian Manhunter segments in the Brightest day bi-weekly. In him I trust

Tomasi is not the ideal writer for the Martian. Better writers for an on-going with him would be Lieberman, Ellis, Waid, or Morrison. Tomasi is decent, just not the best.

He was portrayed well in the JLU. Although, he only used about a third of his total powers, if even that. To be fair though, the same could be said for Stewart.

I don't know about Liberman, Ellis would have delays and most likely wouldn't stay for long, Waid is too busy with Boom Studios and Marvel, if he returns to DC it would probably be to write Superman. Morrison would be amazing and would bring the sales needed, he also likes to stay on properties for years, maybe when he is done with his Batman epic

Nighthunter: Read The Others Among Us. You will understand why I recommend Lieberman. I can agree with your consensuses on Ellis and Waid. I honestly doubt Morrison actually would write an on-going for him, but it would be awesome if he did.

Well he did deribetly choose Superman, Batman and Martian Manhunter as his "big three" because he didn't have diana and he has written Superman and Batman after that, so it wouldn't be that much of a stretch

Nighthunter: Maybe. I doubt it though. I really have no idea what writers plan to do with the Martian after Brightest Day, especially considering the progression that is being attempted with his character, but my assumption is that he will simply be returning to a JL title. I have doubts about seeing a miniseries anytime soon, much less an on-going. If you never read The Others Among Us though, I would strongly recommend it. Probably the best Martian Manhunter series written to date, in my opinion. www.comicvine.com/martian-manhunter/49-18626/

Robinson said that he isn't changing his line-up for at least an entire year more and this is the perfect time to try to push Martian Manhunter harder to fans

Nighthunter: I see. Maybe he will get a miniseries then. Too bad that means the Martian will be out of the JLA for a while though. He is a mandatory member.

I was really disappointed with the conclusion of J'onn's story line in Brightest Day. I never had very high expectations from it to begin with, but I just am not seeing how his character benefited from it.

It's sad that DC plans on retconning Martian Manhunter as a founder of the JLA after the reboot in favor of Cyborg.
