Of course they're in Times Square the one day I don't walk through it for work

That's the way it works.
What do you these scenes are for?

I haven't checked the videos, but I'd imagine it could be used to expose Rogers to the modern world. Times Square is pretty much a representation of modern America and its culture.

That's what I was thinking, but do you think it is a bookend for CA: TFA, or a scene for The Avengers?

I think maybe this is the after credits footage or something. Kind of like on the Ultimates when Rogers breaks out of the hospital because he thinks he is in a nazi trick.
He breaks out into the city and realizes everything is true. He really is in the future. Bam! Fury comes out and says some "Badassmotherfucker" line and credits continue rolling.

I don't think so because it's my understanding Cap's film will take place in the past and present.

That was my impression, that we would see a good amount in the past and then some in the present day.

Well, in that case this could definitely be a post-credits scene that builds up to the Avengers. Cap's wearing the SHIELD shirt, he could have broken out after waking up and then when he's all in awe in Times Square, Fury approaches and they talk it out...And Fury remarks how he wants him to lead to the team.
BAM! Avengers!

That is a bit disappointing but understandable. You forgot the brackets around your tag, Erik. It won't work without the brackets.

What is disappointing, and why do you feel that way Dedman?

I was hoping for a bit of present day combat and intrigue. Maybe his fight continues in the present with the Red Skull but maybe he does not realize it is the Red Skull but then they do a reveal to the audience.
