I guess having different interpretations is always good. I mean he truly felt that what he was doing was for the betterment of the New World he was trying to create. In the manga, during the warehouse scene, Raito/Light pleads Ryuk to kill everyone in the room but Ryuk simply stated that he wasn't on anyone's side. Ryuk kills him though by writing his name in his Death Note due to their beginning promise.
If there's ever a spin-off, I have a feeling Raito/Light will be a Shinigami. There were many signs of this in the manga. Anyone who uses the Death Note can never go to Heaven or Hell anyway. In the one-shot special anime, a new Shinigami appears in the Shinigami Realm and asks where the Rogue Shinigami, Ryuk is. He ends up meeting him, it was pretty epic.

Raito/Light isn't completely evil. Raito/Light isn't completely a good guy. He's a little of both, and at the same time, neither. True, I found myself viewing him more of a villain, but I can see how he's a hero as well. He really is an interesting character to say the least.

Indeed, I was surprised with the complexity. Not the most complex character I've seen in anime, but great nonetheless. I loved the possibility of him being a Shinigami in a spin-off and that appearance of him as a Shinigami in that one-shot anime special, humoring Ryuk.

Any reason in particular? I none of the characters were really interesting to me. The plot didn't impress me and the protagonist was a douchebag and not one presented in a way that made him interesting in my opinion.

I found it as more of an interesting showing of absolute power corrupts even the best of us. I did like the whole oldman Ryuk meeting up with that newbie Shinigami that everyone believes to be Light. L was the real hero IMO.

That's what he was written to be as. Much like Light, L was essentially his mirror image with his own quirks and cash flow ofcourse. The main defining difference is when L got his hands on the Deathnote he didn't let the thing turn him into what Light had become.

Well to be fair, L never wrote anyone's name in the Death Note and he didn't have the same views as Light/Raito, so he shouldn't even be interested in using the book.

none whatsoever, he could never have existed for all I care. Or died in the first episode.

Anyone know if this is a real alternate ending to the series? www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ue8fM2FBL_A&feature=relatedRewatching this and the funeral scene really kicked in Light's evil meter IMO.

I've seen that video but I think it's fan-made. I would've preferred that ending though tbh. There was a one-shot anime special which I talked about earlier, and there's speculation that in the one-shot, Light/Raito was a Shinigami.

Yep it was heavily implied to be light, when tossing Ryuk the apple. I mean it makes sense either of these endings, you can't go to heaven or hell after playing with the Notebook, so somethings gotta happen.

Completely agreed man. Those endings are just so much better imo. Honestly though, the series wasn't the same after L died but I still liked it. I just liked the first half more when Kira was in his prime.
