I hated Near, he was such a tool. L and Raito/Light were awesome. It was a well put together series.
One of the rare occasions where I preferred the manga over the anime. The Japanese sub cast was amazing and the English dub cast was awesome too. Great manga/anime, definitely in my top 500.

The Shinigami in the anime had a different feel than other anime's i've seen. It was refreshing.
Also, the main character was awesome. Go Light!!!

At first he was doing good to an extreme, but then the power corruppted him and he started doing a few things that were a bit evil. By the end of it, he was crazy LOL

I liked the 'place' Light went...
Spoiler
But I would have preferred that there was a rule stating that users of the death note who kill more than a certain number become shinigami themselves. It would be a plausible origin for all the shinigami.

Lol, I'm the only person in existence who thought Light was evil I guess. He was an awful person and deserved what he got. The only thing is, he's the main character and fans get to see the story from his perspective a young genious villian. Worste of all what he was doing was actually working and having the world's crime rate drop significantly while likely making a lot of people's lives for the better. To be entirely fair withpit the Deathnote. with mind wipe he was a completely different individual, a brilliant stand up guy dare I say, with a strong belief in justice. Problem is that notebook corrupted the heck out of him. The shame is he played a perfect ball game and only lost due to his own follower's mistake. Near didn't deserve that win.

Raito/Light isn't completely evil. Raito/Light isn't completely a good guy. He's a little of both, and at the same time, neither.

Raito/Light isn't completely evil. Raito/Light isn't completely a good guy. He's a little of both, and at the same time, neither. I'm somewhat unsure of that. He originally was a great guy, but after getting that note book it litterally flew to his head. Basically life and death became a simple name and face away, he saw eveything as a game of chess and he gained a bit of a god complex. If he had stuck to his guns and just kept killing those he new where evil and bat!@#$ crazy as he did with it, getting the attention of the police and killing generally a lot of good people just for trying to bring him to justice. He became essentially a terrorist.

I viewed it in a more complicated perspective.

I viewed it in a more complicated perspective. Thats the thing, the only good thing he was doing by the end of the series was essentially make the world crime free. Outside that, he was killing good people to save his rear, manipulated his father, even contemplated killing his own sister, played both Misa's and whats her names heart for whatever opportunity they could bring him, he had people worshipping him as a god and loving it. Originally his goal was a noble one, he was going to use that notebook to rid the world of crime, along the way he lost himself completely to it's power and became drunk off it. It hard to say he was moderate on the good and evil chart when he was pretty much a sadistic murderor by the end of the series. I'll still maintain he was the most interesting character in the show and the most likable being the main character and all. I can't just understand how he can't be viewed as anything more than a terrorist by the end of it all though. Ryuk on the other hand, despite his sick pleasure in this all, was pretty balanced. In the anime he even kills him, can't remember the manga though.
