Writer: Mark Millar
Artist: Carlos Pacheco
The Ultimate Avengers roster:
Hawkeye, Nick Fury, Gregory Stark, Nerd Hulk, Red Wasp & Black Widow
This story picks up in the Ultimate Universe three weeks after the events of Ultimatum. The Triskellion is being rebuilt and we see the return of Nick Fury. In Chicago, we see Hawkeye and Captain America battling a group of AIM terrorists who've stolen some high tech materials from the Baxter Building. Cap and Clint don't seem to be having much trouble with them until Cap comes face to face with their new man, the Red Skull. He promptly kicks the crap out of Cap and tosses him from a helicopter. Hawkeye manages to save him but they can't stop them from making off with the stolen tech.
We learn the Red Skull in the Ultimate Universe is actually Cap's son. Before he disappeared during WWII, we find out he knocked up his former flame Gail and she gave birth to their son months later. The boy was raised in a top secret government facility until he turned 17. After years of perfect behavior he promptly killed everyone in the facility and became a terrorist/assassin for hire.
Captain America goes rogue to track him down and this prompts SHIELD to hire Nick Fury to field a team of black ops agents to track him down. This new team includes some new and old faces in the Ultimate Universe. The team includes War Machine, the Red Wasp, the new Black Widow, Hawkeye, the Nerd Hulk and their backer Gregory Stark (Tony's older brother).
We also find out the stolen tech Red Skull has obtained has the blueprints for a Cosmic Cube. It's up to Fury's new black ops squad to take down Captain America and then take down the Red Skull.
Fury Thoughts:
It feels like Millar is trying to reboot the Ultimate Universe here and that's definitely a good thing. The art by Pacheco is outstanding, especially his Nerd Hulk. There's a good mix here of established characters and some cool new characters to provide some fresh faces. Millar does a really good job here of making fans forget Ultimatum and thats a compliment of the highest order. He also does a good job of giving the new faces strong personalities of their own. I've read the arc a few times myself and I'd highly recommend it.
8/10 for a fun story with action and some nice intrigue for future stories.
