Ultimate Avengers Vol 2:Crime & Punishment
Writer: Mark Millar
Artist: Leinil Yu
Mark Millar brings another famous 616 Marvel character to the Ultimate Universe in this series. This time it's everyone's favorite motorcyclist with a flaming skull, the Ghost Rider. He's been on a killing spree and the orders have come down from the White House to take him down. It's up to Nick Fury to recruit a new black ops squad to take down this priority threat.
Fury's new team includes some old and new faces to the Ultimate Universe. His first recruit is Frank Castle, The Punisher. In the Ult Universe he's a former cop with the same penchant for justice as his 616 counterpart. The next recruit is Tyrone Cash aka Leonard Williams, also known by some as the black Hulk. We find out that in the Ultimate Universe he was actually the first Hulk and taught Bruce Banner everything he knows. He joins the team after Nick Fury threatens to reveal one of his biggest secrets. They're joined by the Black Widow (Monica Chang), War Machine & Hawkeye.
Fury Thoughts:
Millar's renaissance of the Utltmate Universe continues here and once again he does a superb job. He's joined by artist Leinil Yu whose art gets better everytime I see it. Millar does a great job here of establishing the new characters histories first before sticking them in battle situations. I'm a big fan of knowing about a character and caring about them on a personal level first rather than just oohing and aahing over their battle feats first. He does an outstanding job of that with Tyrone Cash & the Punisher here. After the opening issues to introduce these guys Millar kicks it into high gear with some all out action. We also find out the origin of the Ghost Rider and why he's on his personal mission.
Another great job by Millar. I enjoyed this even more than the Red Skull arc and that's saying something.
8.5/10
This is also available now in trade paperback format.
