Weapon X: War Of The Programs
Issues 23-25
Writer: Frank Tieri
Artist: Tom Mandrake
War of the Programs is a 3-issue story arc that ran in the pages of the short lived Weapon X series. This arc stars Agent Zero, Fantomex & Wolverine. These 3 men have been brought together after each finding a clue in different locations. Fantomex finds his in the coffin of the supposedly deceased John Sublime (director of Weapon Plus), Wolverine finds his in the abandoned Neverland complex and Agent Zero digs up his clue at the abandoned Weapon X facility. All 3 men find the same clue: the word Roanoke.
We also get to see some history of the Weapon X and Weapon Plus projects over the years. We see John Sublime, Dr. Cornelius, Brent Jackson and even Nick Fury himself. In the present, Fantomex tangles with Agent Zero who claims he's never met Wolverine. Fantomex is nearly at the end of his rope until EVA arrives to stop the hostilities between him and Agent Zero. The 2 men take off to the site of a small town called Roanoke. Upon arrival they find Wolverine and Wolverine claims he destoryed it himself.
We then flashback to an earlier time and see that Wolverine did in fact, slaughter the 116 residents of the town. We see John Sublime and Dr Cornelius in the flashback and Sublime seems happy with the amount of damage Logan could do in a wartime situation. Back to the present and Fantomex, Logan and Agent Zero have fell into a trap set by Sublime. They're attacked by a huge group of Sublime's U-Men until EVA rescues the 3 of them.
Fury Thoughts:
This was a series I had not read in a while. To be honest I'm not familiar enough with Wolverine's history to remember if this series led to anything major. It's a fun little arc and we get to see a nice fight between Fantomex & Agent Zero. I'd recommend this if you're a big fan of Wolverine and looking to read something from his past. It's also good for fans of Fantomex because we learn a few things about him here as well.
