"Unfinished Business" Part 1
Writers: Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning
Artist: Leandro Fernandez
This is a pretty big issue for the New Mutants, as Marvel's cosmic gurus Abnett & Lanning take over the book. I haven't read a lot of their work so maybe fans of the two can shed some light on this issue as it pertains to some of their previous work.
The Story:
We open up in San Francisco and the New Mutants (along with Wolverine & Colossus) are taking on a group of Nimrod tech enhanced robots. The robots have taken over a car factory and the team has been called in to assist. They make pretty short work of the robots despite Wolverine having a problem with Danielle Moonstar taking charge of the situation.
We go back to Utopia and Cyclops is having a sit down talk with Illyana Rasputin. He's having a hard time with her recent tactics. Basically he tells her she's under house arrest due to her recent activities endangering everyone on the island.
We also see continual developments in the relationship between Dani & Cannonball. He's still having problems adjusting to what happened in the previous arc and what went down in Age of X. Dani has a conversation with Cyclops and he names her the New Mutants new team leader. Cyclops wants the team to start tracking down any loose ends that might cause them problems in the future. Their first target is Nate Grey, also known as X-Man.
We go to NYC and Nate is taking on the Avengers. However, it turns out that it's only a dream and Nate is in the hands of one of his adversaries from Age of Apocalypse.
Fury Thoughts:
The story here is a pretty good one and I like the idea of the New Mutants having a specific goal as a team. The art on the other hand isn't good. The cover is beautiful but the interior art leaves quite a bit to be desired IMO.
7/10 Pretty good opening issue from Abnett & Lanning.
