50 Girls 50
Writers: Frank Cho & Doug Murray
Artist: Axel Medellin
I was in a really weird mood last week and picked this up. The story here is that a few decades in the future Earth's resources are nearly exhausted. The governments of the world realize that their only chance is to explore other areas of the universe. Earth is overpopulated and in dire need of it's natural resources being replenished.
They realize that interstellar travel is only possible through wormholes but there's a little catch. Apparently, anyone possessing a Y chromosome is incompatible for wormhole travel. Which means we get an all female crew aboard the ESS (Earth Star Ship) Savannah.
As the crew is preparing to return to Earth they run into some serious problems as they're displaced in an uncharted area of the universe by a wormhole. A couple of members of the female crew check out a planet for resources and as expected there's something planet side that slowly deteriorates their space suits. Hijinx with alien life forms ensue until the girls manage to make it back to their ship.
Thoughts: If you're at your local comic shop and think to yourself "I wonder if there's a comic for me with half naked astronaut chicks" then buy this book. If you're 12 years old and in need of a cheap thrill buy it. Everyone else avoid it. This book feels like the ultimate sci-fi cliche comic. There's even a shower scene at the end that's a blatant rip off of Sigourney Weaver in Alien.
3/10 Avoid.
