Eddie Brock aka Anti-Venom returns to wage war on Mister Negative and his gang here. Eddie runs into some unexpected trouble in the form of a new female vigilante called Wraith. It seems she's also after Mister Negative's gang and to Eddie's shock she appears to be Jean DeWolff. (Who originally died way back in Spectacular Spider-Man #107. The year was 1985 if you're keeping score at home.) Wraith is putting the fear of God into Negative's gang and Anti-Venom is feeling like he's a little less of a man because of it.
It's a big day for Peter Parker in this issue as he's being honored in American Science Journal for his work at Verizon Labs. We see some of the inventions he's been working on. Some he uses as Spider-Man like voice activated web shooters and others are more practical like indestructible motor cycle helmets. He calls his Aunt May, who pulls Peter's leg by pretending she knew nothing about his honor. As they're on the phone she comes into physical contact with Mister Negative who's in his other identity of Martin Li. This causes Aunt May to faint as Peter rushes to her side.
At the same time, Eddie Brock is undercover at Li's FEAST Shelter (Aunt May doesn't recognize him) keeping tabs on Mr.Negative. Mr. Negative takes off and Eddie changes to Anti-Venom and takes the opportunity to attack his limo. As Peter arrives to check on May (as Spider-Man) he sees Eddie's attack going down. The two old enemies face off as Peter realizes his powers are weakening due to Eddie's Anti-Venom talents....
Thoughts:
I haven't been keeping up with ASM for the last few story arcs but this issue was pretty easy to follow. I'm eager to see what role Anti-Venom plays in Spider-Island and also if Wraith is really who she says she is.
Great issue and it seems like a good jumping on point for ASM.
