"The Substitute Part 1 & 2" Writer: Christos Gage Penciler: Reilly Brown Inker: Victor Olazaba This story arc guest stars the Future Foundation (Part 1), Hank Pym & the Avengers Academy. It also guest stars an old Fantastic Four villain as you can tell by the cover. The main premise here is Spider-Man being a substitute teacher for the Avengers Academy kids. He's having a really difficult time and it's due to the antics of the villain involved. Unaware of the villain's influence, Spidey Decides to take the Academy kids on patrol in NYC. As you can probably expect things don't go well. This is a 2 part story arc and Christos Gage is filling in for Dan Slott. It's a pretty decent little two parter if you're a fan of the characters involved. It also has some good battle scenes as we see Spidey mix it up with the Academy kids. There are some funny moments and serious ones in this story. If you're a huge fan of the Avengers Academy then I'd pick it up. For regular issues of Spider-Man it feels a little like filler issues, especially with Slott not being the writer. 5.5/10

Agreed, this 2-part arc definitely felt like filler to me. Not a bad read, but nothing great either. Fans of Avengers Academy should definitely pick it up though.

Such a low rating for such nice issues? I really enjoyed it and i think it deserves better rating IMO. =]

I don't think Gage wrote Spidey that well TBH.

Moral of the story: Avengers Academy can beat Korvac but they'll still get their heads kicked in by Spider-Man.

If they were in their older bodies, they'd wipe the floor with Spidey.

Spidey was written pretty well IMO. I love the part where he was trying to overcome his fear and he was stating that nothing scares him more than letting his uncle down and that he will never stop trying. Morph: I don't know much about AA, so was it well written that spidey basically humiliated them, or bad written. I always try to use that instance in a debate, that's why i'm asking.

Oh yeah, that was perfectly well written. Spidey is leagues above the Academy in almost every sense of the word. If the Academy somehow managed to overpower him without a big plot device as a justification, then it would've been bad writing.

I see. Well, actually if it was not for spidey helping Reptil to overcome his hate, spidey would eventually get eaten... I just asked because i have checked who Korvac is and he seemed very powerful. So, it seemed to me kinda strange to have trouble with Pete.

Yeah, it was thanks to a major plot device that they beat him. Some cosmic space goddess (Korvac's wife) lady using her cosmic powers to pluck their alternate reality future selves out of various potential future time lines. So if you wanna get technically speculative, the Academy has the potential to beat Spider-Man maybe ten or twenty years down the line if they really focused on developing their powers and pretty much forsook everything that makes them who they are today, and on top of that, bloodlust would probably have to be on.

I see. Well, they were at least bloodlusted in their fight...

I was kidding about the Korvac thing.
