Secret Six: Danse Macabre
Writers: Gail Simone & John Ostrander
This trade paperback collects Secret Six 15-18 & Suicide Squad #67.
Issue #15 is a Deadshot solo story and it's written by John Ostrander. In this issue we see Deadshot's origin in Gotham and also learn a good deal about his family life. He shares his story with a reverend named Richard Craemer. Deadshot has been having these overwhelming homicidal tendencies and the reverend helps him figure out exactly what's troubling him.
Issue #16 focuses on Black Alice and her wanting to join the Secret Six. if you don't know Black Alice she's a pretty cool character who copies the magical abilities of other metahumans. She uses her abilities to convince the Six to let her join the team. In other words she battles them to a standstill in the strip club where Scandal Savage's "girlfriend" works.
Issues 17 & 18 of Secret Six tie in with Suicide Squad #67 for the team's Blackest Night tie in. Amanda Waller wants Deadshot back in the ranks of the Suicide Squad and sets up the Six to do so. Along the way, the 6 and the Suicide Squad unexpectedly find themselves assaulted by a group of Black Lanterns. We also get to see Catman take on Bronze Tiger as the two teams do battle. Like most of the Blackest Night tie ins the two teams end up having to work together to solve the problem of Nekron's forces. I thought this was one of the better BN tie in stories as it actually had a good plot involving the two teams.
Thoughts:
This is a pretty good trade but the first two issues don't really do much to help the flow of the book. I read it in single format and found it much easier to read. The Deadshot and Black Alice issues do a good job of conveying each character's inner turmoil and their reasons for doing what they do. The Blackest Night tie in is a pretty good one with plenty of action throughout. However, I do prefer the previous artwork of Nicola Scott to Calafiore.
Overall, I'd say this trade gets a 7.5/10 for a fun read at a very good price.
