Syfy's new show 'Alphas' will premier July 11, 2011.
What do you guys think of the trailer? Looks kinda like 'Heroes' with a 'Weapon X' sort of twist. I don't think it looks spectacular, but it may have some good potential. There are only two problems I have with it after seeing that trailer. 1) Saying it's "From the creators of X-Men: The Last Stand" isn't necessarily a good thing. 2) The black guy is really strong. The skinny white guy has techie powers. The hot brunette woman can control minds. The cool "crew cut, beard stubble, leather jacket' guy has powers that give him mad action hero skills. Stereotyping much?

I'm hoping this show can do for me what No Ordinary Family failed to do. After a dozen or so episdoes, I just got tired of the slightly-campy family problems. Not enough real action. Maybe a SWAT team dynamic will be better.

After looking at the trailer again, I'm thinking I'm not gonna like it as much as I did No Ordinary Family. Part of the reason I liked NOF so much was because of that campy feel to it. It had a light hearted, Incredibles vibe to it that you don't see every day with today's super hero shows. Too many people try to make super heroes all serious business and throw out any and all notion of making super heroes fun. Based on this trailer, it looks like another "serious business" kinda deal, which I'll be cool with if it works. I know I'll probably enjoy it regardless of how they set it off, but still--I'mma miss my NOF.

What do you mean you're going to miss it. Did NOF get cancelled? Dang. The last few episodes have been getting interesting.

Yep, it did. And the season finale was definitely leading up to something for a season 2.

Dang it. Just like 'Heroes'. They kill it right when something really big is about to go down.

It wasn't bad It actually reminds me of Hunter Killer because of how they work. Everyone has a task and they are utilized well. The Dude with the Hype-kinesis dope. he's like DD and Bullseye in one.

I just watched the pilot today.
Not bad, I guess, but nothing spectacular either. Some of the characters kinda annoy me.

I'm going to go ahead and write up a review for Season 1.
SPOILER WARNING
All things considered, I have enjoyed the first season of this show quite a bit. It's not the best show I've ever seen, but it's been entertaining enough to consistantly make me want to see the next episode.
As I've stated in movie reviews, I'm not really enough of a theater buff to critique acting, but I will say this: I don't specifically recall any acting in the series that I thought was noticably bad. One actor in particular, Ryan Cartwright (Gary), has impressed me quite a lot. I'm amazed at his ability to act for an autistic character.
The occasional cameo appearances from other famous actors/actresses have all been fun. Summer Glau, Brent Spiner, etc.
The individual plot episodes have all been pretty good. A lot of it has been that sort of cliche "freak of the week" scenario (new enemy with powers they've never encountered before) but it's not always entirely predictable. In the later episodes, they started getting into a 'bigger' plot that looks like it's going to last.
I also like how maturely they deal with the issue of all the main characters having superpowers. Other shows have liked to treat this like a kind of amusing gimmick for the characters. They had scenes of main characters using their powers in normal everyday situations as if it was meant to be comic relief or something (ex. the mom from No Ordinary Family using her super-speed to empty the dishwasher really really fast, or Claire from Heroes trying to hide her mangled up hand after she reaches down the garbage disposal). Thankfully, there has been very little of that in Alphas. The show treats the characters superpowers as natural parts of them, rather than as amusing gimmicks.
But the one main thing that I'm liking about this show more than other similar shows is it's lack of obsession with maintaining the status quo. No Ordinary Family barely did anything that permanently effected the original dynamic. Heroes was better, but still usually took a long time to evoke changes. Heck, it took them four full seasons before they hit the point where the rest of the world became aware of the existance of metahumans. Alphas just did the exact same thing in one season.
After one season of this show, I give it a 7 out of 10. Not amazing or anything, but definitely enough to keep me watching.

Hulu hasn't been doing a very good job with streaming this show. They're still several several episodes behind.

Yeah, they wanted to wait until the season was over with and the put up five at a time. They've been doing that for a lot of shows recently.

Now I've seen up to 8. When Hulu ups the others I'mma finish it off, but so far, this show his super good. I like it very much. Bill and Gary are my favorite characters. They are the tightest duo to ever hit television. And it's funny too, because from the start, I thought I'd hate Gary, and Bill just seemed so bland, but man, they are the best. This show is legit.

I meant to post in this thread as I have enjoyed the show thus far.
I like how their abilities not only empower them but have drastic effects on their personalities and behaviors. It isn't just them lamenting that they are different but that those differences make them behave in such a way. Bill is more aggressive thanks to his Hyperadrenal abilities whereas Gary has difficulty processing the real world thanks to his Transducing. It appears that there are very few Alphas who can be 'normal' because their abilities make them different. It is a brilliant direction to take superpowers in and I wish I thought of it myself.
I hope that next season they can add a couple more Alphas to the team like maybe Summer Glau since they will likely have to go rogue after the Doctor's actions in the finale. I am also excited to see how Red Flag's plans unfold next season.
