This week looked like another dud. Wonder Woman's tie in would obviously be relatively important backstory but I've never been a fan of Wonder Woman outside of the Justice League cartoon. Grodd, Heat Wave and Nightwing are cool characters but Grodd aside, I couldn't see how they could possibly be important to this crossover or really have a change that made me want to read about them.
So once again, I went into a week of Flashpoint expecting a few shimmers of goodness along with a whole lot of bad. Once again, I was right. Once again, the shimmers of goodness were in all the wrong places.
Wonder Woman and the Furies 1 - As expected, we get major backstory here. This is the story of why the amazons and atlantians are at war. Maybe I'm just annoyed at Ocean Master playing to expectations. Maybe I'm just pissed that they squandered the chance to use Tempest in a story by killing him off. Overall, I'm just not impressed with the book. It also loses points by featuring characters on the cover that aren't actually in the book at all.
2.5/5
Legion of Doom 1 staring Heat Wave - I'm sorry. I don't see how there being no Flash caused Heat Wave to age at half the rate he was and I don't see how time travel can cause metahuman prisons in the swamp to look exactly like the classic LoD headquarters in the swamp. Overall, Heat Wave is just too bad ass for his own good. He's just not that powerful, especially when we're talking about a world that's gone to hell like Flashpoint has.
I liked the Cyborg pages and the last page was pretty cool but I can't suggest picking this up.
2/5
Grodd of War oneshot - I actually liked this story a lot. The dialogue and art are good. The only problem is that Grodd, while interesting, is unsympathetic. I'm glad he's going to fight Wonder Woman and Aquaman in the main series (probably) and this issue was entertaining but I just have no sympathy for the guy. He's killing millions because he's bored. Meh.
Still fun, though.
3/5
Deadman and the Flying Graysons - This was the best issue of the week by far. I loved the dialogue, the art, the other characters at the carnival, the appropriate usage of splash page (a rare thing these days, imo), the major plot hooks for why the circus is where it is and why the circus matters, and particularly I like seeing Dick Grayson's parents.
You know how I was complaining about killing off Tempest rather than using him? Well in this story, instead of just killing the Flying Graysons off right away, Krul characterizes them. What a great idea! It's a wonder nobody else thought of it.
