Breaking Point Part #1
Writer: Kieron Gillen
Penciller: Terry Dodson
Inker: Rachel Dodson
The X-Men get recruited by Abigail Brand to investigate some Breakworld activity in outer space. We find out that since Colossus refused to take the role of Powerlord on Breakworld the entire planet has been in political and civil disarray. There's a huge warship from Breakworld headed towards Earth and the X-Men and Abigail Brand head it off at the pass. Once on board they discover Kruun's shocking mission: he is seeking political asylum among the X-Men.
The Good:
This issue has some fun dialogue throughout the book. In the opening Namor teams up with Colossus and Kitty to take down an Atlantean war robot that's landed on Utopia. The conversation between Dr Nemesis and Magneto was interesting as well. Magneto is extremely curious about the properties of the metals in the giant Breakworld bullet. He also basically admits that he was only able to bring it to Earth because of it's unique properties. The tensions between the X-Men and Abigail Brand results in some pretty good interactions as well. You can definitely feel that this isn't just another friendly mission for the X-Men.
The writing in this issue is pretty rock solid and a good opening issue for what seems to be a good story arc.
The Bad:
I'm still not sold on Terry Dodson's art. It's not the worst I've seen but it leaves quite a bit to be desired. The characters come off a little cartoonish at times and some of their faces are just bad.
Overall:
Despite the subpar art this is a pretty good issue. If you were a fan of the Astonishing X-Men arc that involved SWORD & the Breakworlders I'd recommend it.
7/10 I'll definitely track down the remaining issues after reading this.
