I'm going to start a new article series on the Ledger that basically gives background info and an opinion on a writer/ team of writers that is underrated and still writing comics. This article is going to discuss Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti!
For those of you who aren't familiar with their work, Gray and Palmiotti are a long time pair of writers who write for DC, but not exclusively. They have been the writers of many books including Jonah Hex, Power Girl, Freedom Fighters, Hawkman, and more. Their run on Jonah Hex became so popular that it led to the movie on the character. NOW, let me give my opinion on the Dynamic Duo.
Their writing is spectacular, In my opinion. They have quite a few strong points that I really want to stress. Here they are!
1. The ability to keep a sense of realism. I have read quite a few of their comics and I always see how they keep the characters relatable and very real even though they have super-powers. They show that these characters have human flaws and that the business is very dangerous. That can be anything from seeing the death of a hero on the battlefield to having an addiction or personality flaw that isn't easily fixed. They can always make us relate to them and learn their personalities. We get a sense that victory comes with a price and that being a super-hero isn't an easy job.
2. Their plots are always interesting. With the depth and realism that the writers use in their characters, their plots keep us hooked with villains and stories that are unique and fun to read. Government corruption, Family problems, Betrayals, and all the rest of the classic plots are all present, but with original twists on them that don't take away from the realism.
3. They do research. Every time they use a character that has history, they make sure that history and the character's powers and relationships are honored in their writing. Every time I have seen them use a character with previous history (Uncle Sam, Geo-Force, Power Girl, Jonah Hex), they stay true to the character and still manage to add to the character.
This isn't to say they both don't have their flaws, they were both involved in Countdown, but for the standards of writing that is around in the present, I certainly think they deserve respect and some attention for their writing.
You want to check them out? I strongly suggest checking out Freedom Fighters! Either of the limited series (Both are 8 issues), or the ongoing that made it to 9 issues (Just one long arc). These are definately worth checking out!!
Do you Agree/Disagree? Do you have an opinion on the Duo? Have suggestions for future articles? Please post and give me feedback!
