Now first off, I AM NOT scanning these for illegal reasons, such as distribution. I just want to scan specific pages or panels for use in debates or what have you. Now, what is a good method? I am afraid to use my scanner for fear of damaging my comics. I actually take rather good care of them, you see. So how can I get both good clarity and keep my comics safe?

But wouldn't it damage the binding?

If your worried about the bind leave the comic open wide on the flatbed. with most scanners you can target (crop)where you want the image to focus on so only 2/3s the non scanned page need drape over the scanner.
