I'm sure most, if not all, of you are familiar with the movie review aggregate site called Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews have been coming in for Captain America for the past couple days now, and have started very low (about 40%). It has now shot up to 66% and should rise much higher. Why is this you might ask?
Well let me drop some conspiracy theory on you. Rotten Tomatoes is owned by Warner Brothers. As you may know, WB and DC are partnered, so WB makes all of DC's movies. After Green Lantern bombed and got slaughtered by critics, it seems they feel a bit hurt and are now way behind in the super hero movie race to Marvel. It seems WB is now attempting to affect Cap's box office numbers by tinkering and manipulating reviews. Rotten Tomatoes has so far not put up many positive (fresh) reviews that are out there on the internet, in lieu of adding every single possible negative (rotten) review they could find. On top of that, they have taken several positive reviews, and scored them as negative. Namely, THR's 7/10 review, and Slant's 2.5/4 review which equates to a 63%. WB's opening "Friends With Benefits" received the same 2.5/4 review from Slant, which was given a 'fresh' rating. Another valid point to bring into this is that Cap's current average rating is 7.1, which is much higher than other movies' ratings at 66% on the Tomato-Meter. For example: Thor has a 6.7 average rating, at 77% on the Tomato-Meter. X-Men: First Class has a 7.4 average rating at an 86% on the Tomato-Meter.
This is Tomato-Meter manipulation 101. For those of you not familiar to what constitues and rotten and fresh rating, the cut off is 60%. Anything above is deemed 'fresh' or positive, and anything below is shunned as 'rotten' or negative. The Tomato-Meter is a percentage of the amount of positive, or negative, reviews there are compared to the amount of reviews in total.
Is WB/DC bitter about Green Lantern and Marvel in general? Are they, and Rotten Tomatoes, purposely attempting to sabotage Captain America: The First Avenger at the box office? A lot of people go to RT, and a lot of people base their decision on seeing a movie in theater on reviews. Thor came out to 77% on RT in May, an while it isn't made by Marvel Studios, but rather Fox Studios, X-Men: First Class is sitting at 86%. Green Lantern is rated at a dismal 26% (4.6 average rating).
Comic Book Resources actually has an up to date review tracker and aggregation for Captain America, which takes all reviews into account, as opposed to Rotten Tomatoes' falsely engineered aggregation. Currently, CBR's agg is standing at 82%, and RT's agg is standing at 66%. Check them both out for yourself below:
