I don't have anything against Nelson, is just that I didn't see the point of killing Fate in the first place, literally no one noticed (not even his freaking father....)

There wasn't really a reason to kill of the original Nelsons either. I mean they were mystically kept from aging. Plus the very premise of a combined man and woman Dr Fate that was used in the next version was introduced in the Immortal Dr Fate mini of 2 years prior. There was no reason that the Nelsons couldn't have learned that the very thing they did to win against the combined forces of Order and Chaos was actually always meant to be.

I think I'm starting to see why DC can't keep a book about a magic character going. There isn't even enough interest to keep discussion going. In my opinion a real shame, because both DC and Marvel have some great mystical characters.

I think Willingham tried for a while. Gerber and Griffin.

@beatbok: What character do you think deserves an ongoing? Or if you could, which characters would you have in a Sentinels of Magic; Limit is 7?

@beatbok: What character do you think deserves an ongoing? Or if you could, which characters would you have in a Sentinels of Magic; Limit is 7? While I'd like to see a couple get an ongoing I'm realistic enough to know it want happen. The best i could hope for would be maybe a double feature, in which I'd like to see Dr Occult and Dr fate (if the new Sargon had survived i wouldn't have minded him either) As for Sentinels of Magic The Phantom Stranger is a must though only as adviser (it's the role he plays best adviser or moral compass and supposedly his assigned role) Alan Scot since after brightest day he's a pretty central "mystical" figure making deals between orders of power etc. Faust recently proven himself quite well. Constantine only because he's the perfect foil for all the others. ArionI know I'm alone here (because he hasn't been seen in over a decade and a half) but he's had adventures all over the DCU time stream and aside from Spectre, Fate and Stranger is easily the DCU heavyweight in magic (far above any other character). Not sure about the last two, only know I'd exclude Zatanna and Dr Fate. Their the two DCU mystics that still get attention so in the interests of building the DCU mystical world let them continue to build it alone.

I liked Blue Devil during Day of Vengeance and what I read of Shadowpact. Well I think every group needs a powerhouse, why not Captain Marvel [Billy Batson of course]? And possible Black Alice?

Hey I LOVE BD (collected his entire original series right from the preview insert in Firestorm), I'd just prefer him on a Shadow pact. The Sentinels should be like the overseers of magic, not the enforcers.

Then we need a magic group title out there.

Then we need a magic group title out there. Absolutely. I've said it before on DC boards 9in the hopes that maybe the DC staff might run with the idea), but I really think the best possible way would be to have a Magic Anthology title. Since it's obvious that none of the mystics get enough support to hold a title long. Even the teams have failed or only lasted a little while. I think in the current market it's time to reconsider the Anthology idea for a book. All you'd have to do is make sure that the mix of stories had a link that attracted the same or similar audience. So they'd need to be similar characters. In this instance we have the perfect link of magic. Let's say in this magic monthly there was a team story (which could rotate between the Sentinels and Shadowpact). as well as 3 solo stories (or two solo and one team up). Back up one might rotate between the Stranger, Fate, Occult (and if she looses her solo Zee). Back up two might be the other mystically powered but not mage type characters (Blue Devil, Captain Marvel, etc) or lesser mages. then you have maybe the team up. It could be a 60 page and maybe bi monthly if needed) The way you rotate the stories is to have you main players still present every issue. Say for example that you have the sentinels as the team story one month than the back up features would be of the solo characters who aren't in the sentinels (and maybe shadowpact members or solo operator). The month you have the Shadowpact team story you do the reverse. So naturally you set the two teams up to have a good mix. Always include one of the main mystics (fate, stranger, Zee, Spec) in the team up but not one featured elsewhere. Do it this way and most of those who would buy the book wouldn't feel like they're paying for half a book they didn't want (because all the characters have similar appeal). Plus those who like a specific draw card would never feel left out. that's my wish list 9aside from the fact I could read all my favorites for one price

Hm... I see two problems with your proposal, Beat. 1) Too broad an audience. By alternating stories and characters, you're kicking those who aren't fans of magic as a whole, and would only read it for a specific character. It's not like a team book where your character still appears all the time, I think this would simply give people reason to skip every other issue. 2) It would make storylines much more difficult. Sure, you could tie everything with an overarcing story, but any story on a personal level would take forever to work out. IDK, I'm not an expert in story plotting so I might just be talking nonsense, but I'd say that would significantly reduce your sales. I suppose the only way would be for each of us to buy 50,000 copies every month to keep the book going. It's costy, but hey, whatever it takes.

This is because to new readers, they are not easy to get into. Because of the Sorcerer's paradox. I don't disagree with this, but I do think that any idea can work and be a viable comic, so long as it has a good writer on board. Also, funny I never noticed this thread before, Heh.

I suppose the only way would be for each of us to buy 50,000 copies every month to keep the book going. It's costy, but hey, whatever it takes. You may be right, I guess it's just my favorable recolections of youth. When I was in my teens and 20's (up until the time of COIE) 90% of comics that were sold in Australia were reprinted in Australia as anthology titles. It was due to protection legislation that limited the number of imported publications (as a % ) allowed into the country. I grew up buying maybe a dozen or so titles a month that covered the stories of many many more characters. So for example if you bought JLA it was a 90 page book that had a story of the JLA plus say a GA or Atom or Hawkman (or Reddy etc) story. there was a monthly title of Superheroes that had GL, WW, Aquaman, and other. Worlds finest also had aside from a Superman batman team up other stories .Some of these characters weren't high on my favorite list and I'll admit I probably wouldn't have bought them if they were solo, but I ended up during these years collecting almost everything from both DC and Marvel. About the only titles that were solo devoted to one character in the Australian market at the time were Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Hulk and Daredevil ( both Hulk and DD weren't as frequent maybe bi-monthlies). presumably because in the US they all had three titles (making it still very easy to do a solo monthly of 80 to 90 pages). I collected so many of my favorites for so little in these years. After COIE (when the regulations were relaxed under the Hawke Government who believed that free trade made your businesses stronger ) I suddenly had to fork out a fortune on over 70 titles a month to collect all the characters I was used to getting all the time. You know what for almost a decade I did that (I'd been that hooked in my cheap anthology years), before I started to kull it down. I guess I just figure there might be a chance of growing interest in characters that many readers wouldn't try in normal solo format (at least for a while) and then there might actually be enough support to hold it. The alternative could be to have a fixed list of stories (say sentinels, Shadowpact, and two solos of characters not on the team) constantly, once once character starts getting strong interest try a solo then change that feature (or remove them from the team their on).

The more I think about it, if either DC or Marvel did do an anthology title it should have at least 2 features the same each month (maybe 3). If there were say 4 stories per issue than at most 2 (or maybe only 1) would change intermittently, to retain that readership. So say Sentinels of Magic or Shadow pact are your main feature. Then you had back ups of Spectre or Dr Fate or Phantom Stranger (if one was getting love elsewhere in DCU like JSA not them), and say Dr Occult or another (needless to say which ever characters are regular back ups aren't part of the team featured). The last would be like a mini feature, in which the character featured might get a 6 issue shot in place of a mini series to showcase and test.
The two issues Sovereign (phantom raised) weren't issues in the anthologies I used to collect because they were for the most part the same month in month out (so readers wouldn't skip issues) in much this way. Wold any of you guys buy such a title.
