I posted this on my Wordpress blog. The question ties into a novel I'm in the process of editing and rewriting, and I thought I would bounce it off of everyone here.
The scenario: In reaction to a major devastating event, your state has passed an anti-vigilante law. You have manifested super powers. While walking on the beach one day, you see out at sea a sinking boat with people trapped on board. It would be very easy for you, with your powers, to rescue them.
The question: Do you rescue them?

Yes.
Though technically that doesn't fall under vigilantism.

Yes. Though technically that doesn't fall under vigilantism. Agreed. More like Good Samaritan Law on a super scale.

With great power comes great responsibility. If my state's government doesn't want me using my powers for good, that's their problem.

Yes. Though technically that doesn't fall under vigilantism. Agreed. More like Good Samaritan Law on a super scale. It would only be vigilantism if you were beating up criminals while on the sinking ship.

Yeah, that's really not vigilantism to begin with, and if it's so easy, then I could get in, do my thing, then leave. Does that mean I'd be goin' outta my way to save every cat up in a tree? Hecks naw. I'll be playin' up playin' Marvel 3 instead.

I think the question should be reworded to include a fairly harsh punishment and if we do chose to aid them it will be done to us. As it's set up now, it's pretty much at best a slap on the hand if anything scenario.
Regardless, as I would imagine most ledgers here would say the answer for the vast majority would be yes, minus Innervenom using his powers for world domination. What comic book, manga, anime, etc fiction involving super heroes loving individual not want to save the day, especially Spiderman fans. We've all seen that movie or read that book where the hero gets love or hate from the public doing their thing, we cheer them on regardless seeing them as them as the men and women we wish we could be in some cases.
I would imagine regardless such an public uproar at punishing the hero would result on a free pass regardless, assuming this state is super duper oppressive.
