Anyone else besides me and PirateKing69 reading this limited series? If you've been following the Black Panther's series then you're quite familiar with the writer David Liss. The art is by Andy Troy & Tim Bradstreet. It's some of the finest art you'll find in a comic book today.
The Background:
Set in the Depression era United States, the Mystery Men are a team that's come together to battle the evil General. The General is a disfigured man that's murdered Alice Starr, a prominent actress on Broadway. He's also trying to resurrect an evil goddess named Nox for as yet unknown reasons.
So you ask yourself, who are these Mystery Men and why are they teaming together? Well, I have answers!
The Team:
The Operative: Dennis Piper was the boyfriend of Alice Starr and is on the trail to track down the General. He's the masked vigilante pictured in the foreground and similar in appearance to the Spirit from DC Comics. It also so happens that he is the General's son.
The Aviatrix: The sister of Alice Starr, she uses a flying harness for flight. She rescued The Operative and the Revenant from the General's corrupt police forces.
The Revenant: Ezekiel Wright is the Revenant. He worked with Alice on Broadway as a stage hand. He uses a combination of stage tricks and stunts to fight his opponents. Some of his tactics so far include using mist to disorient his foes and has also caught bullets at close range with his teeth.
The Surgeon: Rupert Kingsley was a small time doctor in a mining town in West Virginia. Meek and timid, he helped out a miner who had been beaten by local police. Unknown to him, the police were working for the General and responded by burning his house down. Covered in burns over his entire body, he covered himself in bandages and began a campaign against the General in NYC. He uses his equipment from his time as a surgeon against the General's forces. These items include syringes, scalpels and other items.
Achilles: Achilles was a professor assigned to recover an artifact for the General on a mining dig in Europe. Recovering an amulet that was once used by Achilles, he refused to hand it over to the General. He soon discovered it imbued him with mystical weapons and his strength was greatly amplified. He uses these weapons against the General and his forces.
There you go. This series is only 5 issues and only 3 have been released. It's one of the best minis I've read in quite some time so I highly recommend it. It's also set in what appears to be a timeline of the Marvel 616 Universe as there are references to the Stark name and the Daily Bugle.
