@nexus I'm not upset that he is black. I'm upset that it feels like they did it for a publicity stunt and they just tacked it on in a way that will never actually have an impact on Marvel Universe. @crom cheers

I think Marvel needs to realise that they don't need to change a character's ethnicity to make them different.
While we're at it, let's kill Superman off and replace him with a German guy!

Let's make the Maximoffs incestuous! Ugh. I already could care less about Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, but the Ultimate versions repulse me. I agree with your points, Dane. Well said.

UPDATE: Bendis revealed that Miles Morales is 13 years old.
If Ultimate Spidey's rogues gallery is anything like his 616 counterpart's, it wouldn't make absolutely no sense if a 13 year old who has no experience with fighting or using super powers does anything other than get his ass kicked or die facing Spidey's rogues gallery. They will fuck his shit up.

Ultimate Spider-Man was 15 years old for over 100 issues and did pretty well. I don't think being 13 will be a big issue.

I realize he was 15...but its not being 2 years apart that is the problem...its that he is a 13 year old. Do you remember what you were like at 13? I mean that's middle school here in the states.

Ultimate Spider-Man was constantly being told he wasn't old enough to be doing superhero work. This kid is going to be even worse.

Wow, this is funny. When I looked at the OP, the first thought that came to mind was "Woah, Spidey's black? I'll buy it." Then I was readin' all you guys' replies to it and I'm like, "ha, dang." Ah well. I'm still intrigued.
Anyway, I kinda wanna explain why this isn't as bad as you're making it out to be, could be a good thing, and all that, but I don't feel like it right now, so I'll just say, blah blah blah, this isn't as bad as some of you are making it out to be, could even be a good thing, new directions are cool, and all that yadda blah yaddason. I personally like the idea.

Check this news article from BBC News. Which means 'we're making him a mixed race dual-minority for the literal sake of it with no concern for the story'. Ah yes, because people of Latin and African descent only just started appearing in the last 11 years or so. I cried when Barack Obama was elected. So naturally Spider-Man should be mixed race. I'm a professional editor in a position of authority at Marvel comics and this train of logic makes sense to me. Translation: We want to sell more comics to minority readers. We don't care how jarring or obvious this is. Just put in a half-black/half-latino character and watch the sales numbers soar.

See, this is the kind of thing that keeps racism alive. How are we supposed to see all races and skin colors as equal when these guys are trying to throw in our face that a black Spider-Man is a different Spider-Man? You feel me? I'd have no problem with Spider-Man being black/latino if Marvel was doing it just 'cuz. But all that "rich cultural heritage", "statement about the 21st century", and "resonate emotionally with all sorts of new readers" bullcrap just shows that they are defining this new character by his race. Which, in my humble opinion, is really f**king stupid.
He's not just Spider-Man. He's black Spider-Man!

See that's what I never got about characters like Black Lightning, Black Panther, Black Goliath, etc.
Most of the time their costumes aren't even black in colour, so it naturally makes me think they are called that because of their skin. Which is retarded. Why didn't they just call them Lightning, Panther and Goliath?
Like I said, if they wanted this to reflect a society without racism, they wouldn't be making his ethnicity newsworthy. The headline would read "Miles Morales is the new Spider-Man", with all this racial hogwash left out.

That's actually what that particular species of cat is often called (just 'panther' could refer to a slightly more broad range of cats) and his costume is consistantly black. The other two, on the other hand, are stupidly obvious attempts to get more black people interested in comics.

I'll give them that, Black Panther does kind of make sense. Others, not so much. I think it's really an odd viewpoint to add characters of a certain ethnicity for the sake of it.
I'm Australian and I grew up thinking Captain America was the coolest thing ever. It didn't make me want to move to America or become a citizen. You can look up to someone without them being exactly the same as you.
