Impressive. I've been collecting for a little under 4 years and I have about 4.5 long boxes, 1 book shelf of graphic novels, and a small box for my rares.

Jesus, you practically require separate rooms for all that stuff.

Jesus, you practically require separate rooms for all that stuff. Yep. I did the weight loading calculations and I can only have approx half my collection in 1 room. Thankfully my friend has a 4 bedroom house and I have rented 2 rooms from him. The other half in storage....I can't even recall whats in storage or out of it now

Impressive. I've been collecting for a little under 4 years and I have about 4.5 long boxes, 1 book shelf of graphic novels, and a small box for my rares. It'll grow fast. And especially now they have all those collected editions and masterwork editions of all the old stories. Ideal time to collect.

At least 90% of what I own is collections/tbs/thbs/etc. I only own a handful of singles (all of which I got as gifts from other people, and none of which I didn't already have in tpbs, lol). They take up one bookshelf in my apartment. I might take a picture when I'm not feeling so lazy.

One of my friends form University started to scan everything he owned and then bin the physical comic.....which seems such a waste. I never got in to scanning entire comics as it took so long to do (and I already had well over 10,000 before I got my first scanner) and then 2 years ago my scanner packed up so I never replaced it. Anyways, I figure it won't matter now as most of that knowledge I used to use everyday when on the Vine actively debating, I don't really use, as I don't actively collect or debate regularly enough. It's like a muscle you don't use anymore..........it atrophies. I might soon (within 3 months or so) be faced with an interesting question about where I live and work. My soon to be wife works for the same multinational as I do and her job might draw her over to the US late next year. They will move me over as well but do i really need to take my comics with me.......I'm not actively collecting. I don't really use them anymore (well much past the stuff on power grids) and so do i really need them now.......I could sell them but thats quite a big job as I don't simply want to sell to a shop or the like, who only offer you a fraction of their worth (it would be nice not to make too much of a loss on them!). It raises an intertesting question about what to do. So lets open it up for discussion. Tell me your thoughts. If you had something like 38,000 comics would you keep them all, knowing that it takes at least 2 rooms in a house to to store them ? Would you sell them all ? Would you keep some of them, perhaps your prized rares, and sell the rest ?

Mate, I'm not saying for a second to scan and then trash them. I still have a good chunk of my comic collection in physical comics. Basically the roof of may Garage is full of boxes plus three or four boxes (look like double or more the size of yours) behind furniture along the wall of said garage ( we use it as my kids/my play room lounge, 4 bookshelves, 2 PC's TV PS3 etc) and two of the bookshelves that their behind. To be fare that scanning I got a mat to do, he wanted to borrow my comics and that was the price Obviously my favorites are on the bookshelves ( All Star Squadron, Infinity Inc, JSA {a few series}, LEGION/REBELS, Dr Fate/ Fate, Starman {a few series}, Hellblazer, and all my Cyclone comics) I like to re-read them often. I started out scanning some of my old ones that were frankly getting pretty trashed and figured that it would be a good idea to scan others of that era that weren't as bad. Pretty thankful for it now as quite a few of those have been damaged in moves or other things ( so my actual copies of my golden and silver age stuff are very few left). Also TBH when debating stuff now for my less easily found comics i find it easier to just get it off comixology (damn site quicker than me looking) so i now have probably nearly 1/2 of my collection twice. The advantage of that is that most of my SA digital purchases are actually in colour while my physical comics aren't. Up until 1983 (when the Hawke Government deregulated everything down under) comics like must publications were protected. foreign publishers couldn't sell most of their product on Aussie soil, it had to be printed by a local publisher. The advantage of this was that Murray publications (who both DC and Marvel used ) would print 120 page comics in B&W. So when you got Superman each month it had all the stories of Superman from his titles (like Action) plus Supergirl, Superboy. When you bought Batman you also got Detective, Batman Family, and usually Batgirl or other related back ups, Justice league usually had solo storiess of Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Atom etc, Spidey was the only Marvel solo with a monthly, HUlk - Daredevil- Ironman all had bimonthlies, and Avenger, Defenders, and Xmen were monthly (all of which had solo sories of their members Defenders - Doctor Strange etc) It was great because for about 15 comic purchases a month (all 99 cents) i got the equivalent of 60 titles or more. Needless to say after deregulation when I had to pay $2.50 for the imported US comic and was buying at least 1 comic a day to keep up with the characters i'd come to love my hobby got a lot more expensive. If your moving (internationally) and don't want to cart them I'd look at selling some of those that aren't as close to your heart. However i'd also see if a friend or someone interested could do some scanning for you. Carting a small hard drive around isn't any where near as problematic as a large collection, and you never know when you might want to re-read something.

Sorry, did not mean to imply that you had meant to scan and trash them. I know what you meant. I just mentioned a "working practices" of one of my friends. I'm jealous as hell that you got all those comics so cheaply You make a good point about carting around a hard-drive. That would be a big advantage. I may take your advice about getting someone to do the scanning for me......maybe I could pay them with comics. I do have say 10 boxes of rares / ones close to my heart that I don't want to part with. Sound advice. Thanks Beatboks.

As you would have seen from the screen shot of my PC screen, the folders included all the titles I mentioned being readily accessible on the book shelf (except Hell Blazer, my friend wasn't interested in reading that so I have to rely on hard copy versions- no accounting for taste). Obviously I still have these faves' available at the touch of my fingers (the only comics I have I might add that are in any sort of order). Still when I take the family on holidays I can throw in a hard drive with my comics and a few 100 movies for those quiet nights (don't make my mistake and convert the movies to AVI after ripping disks the program I use took 1 1/2 to 2 hrs per movie) I will say make sure you get a good comic reader program. I have a few on different computers, and recommend "comics rack". That's the one I have on our laptop (which the wife usually uses). Unlike the others it has some handy features like a simple scroll down the page (showing about a 1/3 page per screen) when you get to the bottom it goes onto the next page without complicated click and select action. Also has a magnifier you can activate and move to where you need (which for the faded and worn scanned pages of my Golden Age comics is immensely essential )
