Writer: James Robinson
Artist: Nicola Scott
Writer James Robinson teams up with artist Nicola Scott (Secret Six) to bring you this alternate DC Earth in EARTH TWO!
The issue opens in similar fashion to the recent #1 issue of Justice League. However, in this reality the only heroes battling the army of Parademons are Superman, Batman & Wonder Woman. The Parademons are also led by Steppenwolf. We quickly learn that the Parademons are controlled by a number of towers that have been constructed. We also find out that as soon as a tower is destroyed another is quickly constructed via boom tube.
As our heroes battle the army we also learn several new facts about this particular Earth via their inner monologues. Lois Lane is dead, Diana is the last of the Amazons and Batman has come up with a last ditch plan to eliminate the towers. Apparently he watched Independence Day and came up with it. The plan is to eliminate the towers by uploading a virus and shutting down their ability to be replaced. There is also an onscreen graphic similar to the one that Jeff Goldblum drew in the Oval Office for the President.
We see other heroes involved but not in a combat capacity. Supergirl (called Karen) is watching over a group of US soldiers whose last ditch plan is to use a nuke against the towers. (Wow,another Independence Day reference!) We also see Batman shadowed by his daughter Helena. She's dressed as a female Robin and covering his back in a Bat Jet.
The final battle against the forces of Darkseid is fought and the results will probably shock you. Robinson definitely takes this new Earth in a direction I didn't see coming. As the first issue closes the story focuses on two young men named Jay Garrick & Alan Scott.
Final Thoughts:
This was a pretty good story with some nice twists. The art by Scott is gorgeous and IMHO better than Jim Lee's work on Justice League. I definitely want to see where this goes.
