Snow White: Kristen Stewart
Queen Ravenna: Charlize Theron
Eric The Huntsman: Chris Hemsworth
Synopsis:
The classic fairy tale comes to the big screen starring Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth. The film captures elements from the classic tale but diverges into a new story all on its own. In the film’s first few minutes we get the back story of Snow White as a child. We see her mother’s death, the affect it has on her father, Queen Ravenna duping him into becoming his new bride and the ascension of Ravenna to Queen of the land. This leads to the story of Snow White’s escape and her subsequent journey through out the mythical land presented in the film.
The Good:
The two strong points in this film are the stunning special effects and Charlize Theron as Queen Ravenna. This movie is visually appealing and has some of the best effects for a movie of this genre. The fight scenes are well done, the mythical creatures portrayed perfectly, the backgrounds and settings are stunning and it delivers in this aspect in a big time way. Charlize Theron as Ravenna plays the evil Queen quite nicely. Some of her work is a bit over the top but what great, evil monarch isn’t overly dramatic to a degree? Theron is one of my favorite actresses and doesn’t disappoint in her role.
The Bad:
The overall story line in this one isn’t a negative. The lack of story behind each character’s origin is. Very few of the characters backgrounds involved are fleshed out enough for the viewer. Instead we get short, very brief recaps that do nothing to fill us in on their motivations and reason for being. Sadly this includes a couple of the main characters such as Ravenna and the Woodsman. I wanted to know more about both of them on a much more personal level and didn’t get that. Instead, their stories are briefly touched on and I found myself really wanting more.
Stewart’s character here left quite a bit to be desired. I wasn’t expecting an Oscar winning performance but her lack of range was glaringly apparent. She brought little or nothing to this film and I found myself quietly rooting for Ravenna. Most of the other performances were decent albeit hampered by a lack of back story.
Overall:
I had higher expectations for this. It’s still a fun film but not worth the price of admission for myself and my wife. I’d wait for the DVD rental for anyone that hasn’t seen it. Lackluster performances from Stewart really hamper this film despite its visual goodness.
5.5/10
