Justice League #9
Writer:Geoff Johns
Art: Jim Lee
"The Villains Journey" Part 1
The Story:
This issue introduces to a new villain in the Justice League mythos, David Graves. Graves is a writer that has been stricken with a terminal illness and is in his dying days. We see a variety of subjects that he's written about including Stonehenge, Atlantis and even the Justice League. The dialogue seems to imply that Graves was led to believe the JL were gods walking the Earth. After his doctor explains that any further treatment for his condition is futile he responds by shooting him.
Elsewhere in this issue we see Batman, Cyborg and Superman battling their way through Arkham Asylum in search of the Key. After battling their way and finding him they discover that Graves has stolen all of the information he had on them from his mind.
In Keystone City, the Flash and Green Lantern are apprehending Weapons Master. In a pretty funny moment they argue over who gets to play bad cop and get WM to spill the beans. After the Flash fails miserably, Wonder Woman arrives to get the job done with her magic lasso.
Finally we see Steve Trevor in the clutches of Graves. He's been kidnapped, beaten and threatened by Graves. Graves gives him an ultimatum and wonders who will stand a better chance against him: Trevor's family or the Justice League. Realizing his plight, Trevor promises to give them all the information he needs.
Thoughts:
The Good:
This was a solid issue and much better than the opening arc. Lee's art even looks more refined than it did in the first 6 or so issues. There's some good humor with the GL/Flash/Diana trio and the Batman/Supes/Cyborg team up was pretty cool seeing them demolish their way through Arkham. Hopefully next issue will give us some more background on Graves and his history with the League.
The Bad:
I'm still not really buying Cyborg as the League's go to guy for tech and such. This seems like a role reserved exclusively for Batman. In this issue he mentions being able to hack into Batman's computer and that just rubs me the wrong way.
Overall:
This was a good start for what seems like an interesting arc.
3.5/5
