Fox, Marvel talk swap as clock ticks on Daredevil

Pretty interesting read regarding two of the Marvel movie properties that are currently with Fox. I would SERIOUSLY welcome a Daredevil movie directed by Joe Carnahan. He also directed Smokin' Aces, The A-Team and The Grey. I loved all 3 of those movies. It would also be great if Marvel could get back some of the Fantastic Four rights, if not all of them.

The clock is ticking for 20th Century Fox to put its "Daredevil" reboot into production before character rights revert to Marvel -- but Fox chairman Tom Rothman and Marvel brass have been talking about a tradeoff that would allow the comicbook franchise to remain at Fox past its Oct. 10 deadline.

One reason for the backroom dealings: Fox is in discussions with Joe Carnahan to direct what's been described as a "Frank Miller-esque, hardcore 70s thriller" take on blind Hell's Kitchen superhero Matt Murdock -- a vision that would deviate from Disney/Marvel's family-friendly tone. Carnahan has yet to receive an official offer, though multiple sources tell Variety that he's the choice.

But Fox also has something Marvel wants.

Sources say Marvel would give Fox more time to make "Daredevil" in return for the rights to use characters from the "Fantastic Four" universe, including the giant, world-devouring supervillain Galactus, rumored to play a key role in future Marvel pics. Marvel is also eyeing future use of the Silver Surfer, who in the comicbooks brokered a deal to serve as Galactus' herald in order to save his home planet.

Fox owns rights to the Silver Surfer as part of its deal for "Fantastic Four," which the studio is also rebooting with "Chronicle" helmer Josh Trank.

At this point, the ball is said to be in Fox's court, with talks expected to resume later this week. But as of right now, Fox needs to start lensing by the Oct. 10 deadline to keep "Daredevil" in-house.

Neither Fox, Marvel nor reps for Carnahan would comment on the dealings.

David Slade was previously attached to direct the "Daredevil" reboot, which boasts a recent draft by David James Kelly. Chernin Entertainment is producing the pic.

"Daredevil" would mark a return to the Fox lot for Carnahan, who butted heads with the studio while directing "The A-Team"; the two sides appear to have worked out their differences. After the success Open Road Films had with Carnahan's Liam Neeson-starrer "The Grey," Fox quickly began developing Carnahan's actioner "Continue," which was believed to be his next project. CAA-repped helmer is also developing a fresh take on "Death Wish" for MGM.

"Interesting that they're asking for rights to FF characters while Fox is still (apparently) moving ahead with a reboot. Still, if there's a company that actually make Galactus work on the big screen, I'm confident it would be Marvel Studios. Despite always being a mostly street level guy, it's very interesting and promising that they're focusing on creating such an expansive universe out there."

"I think Galactus and SS would be a much better snag for Marvel Studios than Daredevil would be. The wording also seemed a bit vague, saying they wanted access to Fantastic Four related characters. This could potentially open the doors for Namor, Skurlls, Super Skrull, etc. Regardless, it's clear they're expanding the scope big time, and these would be huge characters to involve. I definitely have faith that Marvel Studios could make an excellent Daredevil film, but ultimately I don't see him meshing well into the connecting Universe they're creating."

I'd be really happy to have Galactus and the Silver Surfer join the Marvel Cinematic Universe - that opens up the cosmic end of things tremendously.

Even Crom must want to see Thor duke it out with the Surfer and the World Devourer in some impressive display of power over a starving Galactus.

Gotta say the underlined really excites me. That's the DD I'd want to see on the big screen. So deal away IMHO.

Agreed! I was a fan of Carnahan's A-Team but I loved The Grey.

I'm kinda hoping Marvel ends up with the rights to DD.......... really just 'cause DD is among my favorite characters and I don't really care about the F4 one way or the other. They never really interested me at all.

I have no doubt that Marvel could make a freakin fantastic movie out of either of them, but I just like Daredevil better.

Yes which is why Dysney should invoke Chutulu to take back it's properties from Fox.

As to a fight between surfer and Thor. I doubt a live action movie could do that justice. Animated maybe, live action haven't seen evidence to this yet.

Personally I couldn't really give a damn about the Fantastic Four one way or another; but they are a lot more interactive with the larger scheme of things than Dare Devil normally is. If Marvel does get him back, a long with the Kingpin and what have you - they could start building up in the cinematic universe of Marvel's street level, but as of now Dare Devil would be pretty lonely and unlikely to be seen in a movie in a very long time.

So I'm hoping Marvel gets Galactus and the Surfer back and that Fox does Dare Devil well. If not, those rights will eventually come back to Marvel given Fox can't really milk a dry cow.

I honestly think with the technology now something spectacular could happen on screen. It's unlikely the two of them will be busting planets as a byproduct, but if they do the Surfer any meaningful level of justice power-wise (none of that power in the board nonsense) Thor will look good no matter what.

A Mjolnir toss there, a board to the back there, some power cosmic blasting to a magic hammer and bam they already have the start to a half decent fight.

Best place for this to happen would probably a Thor movie (which we might get to see it in Thor 3). Unless they decide to have the Avengers go up against Galactus some-how. Which would be a tough sell, given the only big gun is Thor. Might even get the Celestials in the Cinematic Universe as a byproduct of a Galactus introduction.

Actually, it really would be best for everyone if Fox just sold all of their Marvel characters back to Marvel. If they really want to get serious about putting together a Justice League movie, they need to put everything they've got into it. They can't afford to try to be making some Marvel movies at the same time.

So Marvel gets Daredevil and the F4 back, and Fox has more time to focus all their efforts into making the Justice League something worth while.

I am confused! And Warner Bro's is going to be mad that Fox is making a Justice League movie.

Although I'd agree it would be awesome if Marvel had all it's properties back, the problem is they can only produce a number of films a year. That's partly why I don't entirely see it as too much of a bad thing to have some of these characters outside Marvel Studios - that's why you can have these characters see the light of day.

It an occasional treat when they are actually decent.
