This is my first installment in a series of reviews in a nutshell for the comics I am currently following.
Green Lantern #0
Writer: Geoff Johns
Artist: Doug Mahnke
The Story:
This is the debut issue for Simon Baz, the new Arab American Green Lantern. Taking place in Michigan ,the stereotypes really pile on in this one. We see his family viewing the events of 9/11, their upbringing as Arab Americans and finally him eventually turning to car-jacking. The stereotypes continue to pile on as he steals a van that just so happens to have a bomb aboard. It explodes at his former place of work and he's arrested and questioned by Homeland Security. Not surprisingly, he's rescued by the Lantern ring that previously belonged to Hal Jordan and Sinestro. The Justice League and rest of the world are highly motivated to discover Baz's intentions and of course it will happen next issue.
Thoughts:
2.5/5
Not necessarily bad but just stereotypical. I get what is trying to be done here but it just doesn't do much for me. The history on Baz was well done and that saves this issue for the most part.
Stormwatch #0
Writer: Peter Milligan
Artist: Will Conrad
The Story:
This issue is focused solely on young Jenny Quantum. It gives a history of Century Babies through the years through the eyes of Adam-X who actually died in Stormwatch #2. It also sheds some light on the connection between Stormwatch and The Demon Knights. The best part of the issue for me is the cameo appearance of the 20th Century's Century Baby, one Jenny Sparks. She happens to be my favorite female character in comic history and even though it's only a cameo appearance it was great to see her.
Thoughts:
We're given a nice history lesson here from Milligan. Jenny Sparks' appearance was unexpected and a great surprise. It also gives us a good forecast of things to come in this book which seems to have a firm direction now under Milligan. The art is by Will Conrad who does a good job in this.
