Writer: Gregg Hurwitz
Artist: Tony Daniel
The Story:
This zero issue tale of Bruce Wayne begins 10 years ago in the Himalaya Mountains. Bruce is searching for a sensei to help him complete his training. He finds the man in question who proceeds to put Bruce through a grueling series of tests that challenge him both physically and mentally. In fitting Bruce Wayne fashion, there's also a woman involved but with a surprise twist at the end. Through thIS series of tests Bruce is forced to decide what kind of man he want's to become. This issue focuses on his mind developing under his sensei's training. However, being the man he is he also finds influences from other sources in the story.
Thoughts:
This is a pretty good issue. The first thing I've seen this issue compared to is Batman Begins. That's a fair point but really only a visual comparison. This is pretty good for what basically amounts to a one shot that barely breaks the ice regarding Bruce's history in the DCnU.
My only real complaint is that it's way too brief. It just left me with the feeling that there's a great story out there waiting to be told that fully covers the origin of the Batman. Bruce gives some examples of places he's visisted in this book and I would love to see all of them fully explored in one epic tale. There's also a nice backup story with Alfred and it goes into great details about how he's handling Bruce being gone for so long.
Overall:
I like what Hurwitz did here and it made me want more. I hope his future arcs are this solid. The art by Tony Daniel is pretty good too and fits the story well.
