Never really understood the appeal of Godzilla. Okay, he's a huge ass monster who likes to tear shit up. How is that different than the myriad of other giant monsters, some of whom aren't played by guys in rubber suits?
I guess it makes more sense in Japan, what with the whole NUCLEAR BAD commentary of the movies, which is not wrong per se, but it doesn't really interest me.

When I was a kid I loved Godzilla. Something about a huge ass Lizard who has atomic break and destroys other monsters....I don't know, Godzilla is gangster!

See, now I have this image of Godzilla in a suit, with a Tommy gun, asking King Kong what has he ever done to make Kong treat him so disrespectfully...
Why haven't they made a movie about that?

For me Godzilla is kind of a subcultural product, he's a big success as being a major anti-hero, like a standalone Hulk-figure whose rogues gallery is actually interesting. Don't get me wrong, there is something stupidly childish about Godzilla, but he's got the high concept of the giant monster pinned down, stupidly big characters don't always work, but they rule in the Godzilla-verse, which makes some kind of twisted sense.
IDW got the series right, as its as much a social satire as its about the pleasure of sheer destruction. It's partly like watching a giant dog getting even against civilization, except the dog is more awesome.
