Time for my first game Review, with one of the most underrated games this gen,Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom
The Basic:
Name - Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom
Genre - Adventure
Released - 23 November 2010
ESRB - Teen
Avaliable on - Xbox 360 and Playstation 3
Number of playthroughs require to Platinum - 1
No spoilers in this review
The story ,while cliche, prety sad, basicaly the Human`s Kingdom has been overcame by a dark force that feeds on Human`s anger, called ``The Darkness``,and it is up to Tepeu (an abandoned human thief that talks to animals) and Teopl (the powerfull, but with child-like inteligence Guardian) to save the day,as you discover more about Teopl`s past (explained in good looking 2-D cut-scenes)
The plot also posses quite a few plot-twists
Basicaly, the story ,while not great, works for this kinda of game, and it does a good work at making both protagonists like-able and The Darkness.....hate-able
As you progress through the story and gains new powers for Teopl, the friendship betwen the protagonists just keeps getting bigger and bigger,it is also impossible not to like Teopl`s personality, although his voice is ,at first, annoying
The graphics are ,really, nothing special,i wouldnt be surprised if a Xbox could do the same graphics, addtionaly, the Majin will frequently become transparent when he is blocking your character, while it helps you fight more efficently,it is still very annoying
However,to compesate for this, the Art is gorgeus, both Tepeu and Teopl`s design is extremely well done,as are the (many) extra costumes, all enemies look unique and fight differently as well, also, the more damage Tepeu takes, more consumed by the Darkness he gets,if you only have around 5% of your health left,he becomes entirely dark and the mask used by the enemies will appear on his face, that was a prety nice touch
The music ,however, isnt near as good,it is common to keep hearing the same sound-track during fights, but it isnt that bad (given this game is made by the same producers of Folklore, that`s a huge improvement)
Gameplay wise, the game is competent, you can control the Majin during fights (be it ordering him to attack a specific enemy or use an Elemental Power),as well as feed him to recover his health, order him to purify the Darkness from your body, make him crouch (so you can reach to higher places) and use his powers to solve neat puzzles.
As for Tepeu,it is showed through the story that he isnt much of a warrior, and this is showed in the game-play as well, his attacks arent strong, but he is agile enough to prevent you from getting hit too many times....overral,when you fight as Tepeu, you know you can hold your own against every kind of enemy (as well as beat many of then),but you also know you need Teopl`s help.
The game also features several areas where Teopl cant go,forcing Tepeu to fight by himself, however the majority of these occasions relies on a nicely done (albeit relatively easy, since the Darkness is almost blind and deaf,as explained early in the game) stealth and plataform sequence.
There are also instances where you can push a boulder or something similar to kill most enemies on an area faster and easier. These traps are ,however, relatively rare,so make good use of it if you want get the trophy.
The game also features many boss-battles,however, in order to win,you need to make use of your new powers to defeat them,as a brainless fight results in failure, after defeating each boss, you get to talk to the person they were before being corrupted by The Darkness, wich allows you to realise some of then wanted to save the Kingdom as much as you do and others are just assholes
During the course of the game, you will find several chests, fruits and memory shards (required to unlock the true-ending) that are un-reachable,forcing you to back-track if you want to get every secret the game has to offer
However, since the teleport points are far apart from each other, you will have to walk a lot, preventing the back-tracking from turning into a chore, however, the enemies do respawn (wich is the only thing that allows the player to reach the Max level)
Overral, the game has competent graphics with a gorgeus looking art that fits the game perfectly, decent music with a competent story and prety good characters
The Good:
- the Protagonists
- Teopl`s voice fits the ``child-like giant`` perfectly
- Neat puzzles
- Longer than most recent games
- Easy to platinum
- Good ending
- Epic boss battles (specialy the final)
- Great art
The Bad:
- Graphics could be better
- Music is competent at best
- The animals`s voice acting is horrible
- Majin occasionaly becomes transparent
- Kinda easy
- Only features one difficult setting
I give this game a....
8,5
Great
Despite the problems, they do not affect the game`s experience as a whole, though it is easy to fell it could use some more polishment
and now,some extras
E3 trailer
A little gameplay to find one of the game`s treasures
First boss gameplay
