(@mods: I'm not putting this in the official rant thread because otherwise it'd be ignored completely. At least this way I get 1 or 2 people to actually read this thing)
Right then, I can’t help but notice that I, as a webcomic fan, am at the bottom of the nerd fool chain. Video Games are treated with respect by most nerd groups, comic are serious business, and even T.V shows are view is astounding looks into the mind. And yet in all of this webcomics are treated like some kind of tumor that’s only good for laughs. Like it’s impossible for webcomics to do something really amazing and unique. Whenever I ask someone about webcomics they always mention how they read them and when I ask which ones it’s always VG Cats and Penny Arcade. This really pisses me off because that’s the equivalent of me saying I read comics when all I read is Garfield and Pears before Swine. Yes, those comics might be good and all, but they’re far from all the medium has to offer. Not every damn webcomic is two gamers on a couch of kind series. Sure, there are the few people who read Dr.McNinja and 8 Bit Theater, but they don’t seem to get the possibilities either. When I say possibilities, I mean all the different webcomics you can read. You see, webcomics are a lot like comics except half the shit everyone bitches about is just gone. “Bwah! I’m tired of spending money on comics!” They’re free, you asshole. “Bwah! I’m tired of my favorite author abandoning the book!” Always written by the same guy here you retard. “Bwah! I’m tired of the Status Quo being God!” Shit sure changes up in webcomic land. “Bwah! I want to see something new and unique!” Then stop sucking Witchblade’s dick and go read some webcomics you sorry fuck. You see, besides the whole, asshole response thing webcomics actually solve most of the issues that traditional comics have. Sure, there’s a lot more crap floating around, but it’s a lot easier to avoid and if you accidently end up reading some crap at least you don’t have to pay for it.
Right then, here’s another plus about webcomics, there’s something for everyone. Now before you go off complaining about how everyone else is an idiot and thus there’s nothing for you, you need to sit your ass down and listen up. You see, anyone can make a webcomic thus, there’s a webcomic for anything really. Want to read a comic full of disturbing jokes of dark comedy? Cyanide and Happiness is there to help. Want to read a mangaish comic with a cool fantasy plot? Errant Story is ready for reading. Want to read something truly unique that’s never been done before? MS Paint Adventures has two of those. Like Metal Gear Solid, but wish the plot made some kind of sense? Last Days of Foxhound has your back. Want to read something like Farside? Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal is here. You see, that’s just 5 webcomic there and they all cater to a different group of people. And unlike normal comics they’re not trying to make money, so that means you can read them without worry of them going “main stream” and changing everything too much. Not that there aren’t webcomics that do change things around a bit, but you might actually like them so it’s worth the chance.
What really pisses me off is that despite all this stuff floating around here, despite some webcomics being done by fucking professionals, despite at least one webcomic winning an award, people still treat webcomics like Penny Arcade is all they have to offer. Well it’s not, as you’ve seen there’s plenty of variety with just what webcomics can offer their readers, as long as the readers aren’t snobby assholes who just can’t read their comics from the internet. Seriously, this is pathetic, I’m constantly pointing a huge read fucking arrow at some great webcomics telling everyone to just try the damn thing and yet no one reads it. That’s like if you let me borrow Hush (or whatever your favorite Batman story is), and then I didn’t read it or ever speak of it again. In other words it’s kind of a dick move. I understand not liking something, but no giving it even a ghost of a chance is just awful! It’s also kind of hypocritical seeing as most comic fans have constantly been trying to prove that comics can, in fact, be well written and serious despite how silly things get. I try and do the same for webcomics and everyone just kind of says a big fuck you and ignores me. Well now I have a two page rant about it….goodie. Ugh, just go try out some webcomics. And don’t say they’re hard to find, because all you need to do is find one good one and then look at it’s links page.
