Is it supposed to be a standalone movie, or will I have to see all the other Alien movies first to understand it?

No, you can watch this without watching them...
...wait you haven't already watched them?

You should at least watch the first 2, Alien and Aliens, regardless.

Is it supposed to be a standalone movie, or will I have to see all the other Alien movies first to understand it? Judging from the trailers? It honestly looks like it doesn't require any previous knowledge of the entire universe itself. It wouldn't be a very good prequel otherwise if it did either.( Namely why KH birth by sleep was fantastic) It does have something for fans though. But as mentioned above... you haven't seen the first two? Get on that, Alien certainly is showing some age, but Aliens( despite the huge laptops) is still awesome. You don't have to see three or Resurrection, since both are just additions to Ripley's story and not as good as the first two. Sound familiar?

I always knew Santa Claus was a super-hero ;D That looks like it might actually be rather good. Could it be that the underdog Dreamworks might actually become superior to Pixar? Their most recent films, Puss in Boots and Madagascar 3, have both gotten very surprisingly good ratings. And this one looks really good too. Pixar's last two films have both been sequels to previous films, and Brave looks like it's going to be mediocre and forgettable at best.

This pretty much seals it. Pixar doesn't have any original ideas anymore.

Eh, they've had this in the works for awhile. But yeah, Brave doesn't look tempting to see... like, at all.
