Grant Morrison plans to bring the sex to Wonder Woman. www.bleedingcool.com/2011/08/21/grant-morrison-plans-to-bring-the-sex-back-to-wonder-woman/So, Grant Morrison, when can we expect to see your long, long-awaited Wonder Woman series alongside artist Ethan Van Sciver? “It might be out next year,” he said over the weekend, speaking at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, “or it might not.” If you’re getting tired of waiting, you might want to blame Princess Diana’s creator William Moulton Marston for the delay. The late psychologist and free love exponent, who based Wonder Woman on he and his wife Elizabeth’s 18-year-old lover Olive Byrne and imagined a Themsycria where bondage-obsessed Amazons kept female slaves and pretended to hunt and eat one another, is Morrison’s prime inspiration for the series, which could explain any hesitation on DC’s part. “You can take the violence out of the original concept of Superman- all the drop-kicking bad guys into the ocean, which would basically kill them anyway,” said Morrison, “or you can take the gun out of early Batman, and these characters remain essentially the same. But you can’t take the sex out of Wonder Woman. That version of the character died with Marston in the 1940s and she hasn’t recovered her popularity since. “Superman’s meant to be this ultimate expression of masculinity and he still gets to be sexual. Wonder Woman’s meant to be the ultimate expression of womanhood and yet she isn’t allowed anything to do with sex.” It sounds as if what Morrison’s doing with the character fits more closely with his old pre-Vertigo reinventions of Doom Patrol and Animal Man than his current work on Batman and Superman. “It’s hard work trying to recreate what Marsden did without being exploitative or prurient,” he said. “I’ve had to do a ton of reading ahead of this, basically the history of feminist theory from Simone de Beauvoir to Andrea Dworkin.” Edit:update to orignal post ;D ;D ;D ;D It is a sad day when Grant Morrison's writing actually makes me care less about DC.

He's got a point though,Wondy's sex life is treated like a holy grail. Agreed, but this is the fault of writers who are so obsessed with having Wonder Woman sleep with someone that they create a completely boring male supporting character that no one even cares about, only for the character to suffer poor writing for issues on end, and eventually for the writer to trash the entire idea because their execution was so pathetic. Writers just need to write the story and the characters in compelling ways. Everything else will flow along with that.

I believe it's more to do with the fans, having experienced Diana fans on various sites,i can say quite clearly that she has the MOST negative fanbase ever. They can't agree on ANYTHING,they've scared writers away. They bash almost anything they can get their hands on,it's pathetic now.

Because as part of that fanbase myself, I can tell you that there are reasons for that. She is just too disjointed a character, because writers have no idea what to do with her.

the issue of Wonder Woman lacking sexuality as part of her essence was raised some time ago. Morrison being the icon and symbol freak he is, it was only natural he would pick up on that.

Well, I am not reading DC anymore anyway. So Morrison could have Wonder Woman promote misogyny for all I care.

Because of the relaunch. That part i guessed, but what is it about the reluanch that disappoints you? Concepts of certain established characters being re-written, continuity restarting, Geoff Johns. The reboot as a whole, really. I just have no interest in it.

I hope they keep certain aspects. Like Diana Rockwell Trevor inspiring the Wonder Woman armor. That just fit so well it would be disgusting to get rid of it.

I like the idea of Diana facing mystical type threats as opposed to taking on super villains to begin with. Yes, I want to see her take on super villains occasionally but I like the idea of threats from her own little corner of the DCU.

Big revelations for Diana in issue #3, any thoughts?

It was a nice issue IMO. As for the revelation, we already knew it from before so it wasn't much of a shock. I don't mind it as long as the story is good. I don't think it takes anything away from Diana. Also when she punched Aleka, I was like "F*ck yeah!!" lol

Issue #4, this series keeps on delivering. Indeed it does. The art is even growing on me. I did not really like it at first.
