DedmanWalkin actually is a character that I have RPed with several times. He is the result of a mistake made by a powerful necromancer that was subsequently killed in the act of raising him. Is this too improbable? In his latter incarnations, he does become slightly garish but only because he lives so long that he becomes bored... and insane.

Name: Jayar Race: Half elf and half human Gender: Male Class: Rogue Alignment: Mercenary, occasional Anti-Hero Height: 6'2 Weight: 180 Age: 44 (his aging is slowed by being half-elf, so he still appears to be in his 20s)
Magic: Small amounts of natual elven magic (not much more than little tricks on the level of a 1st year Hogwarts student). He is superhumanly strong, quick, and agile and has superhuman senses. He can disappear in shadows and heal from almost any wound.
Skills: Master of stealth combat (greatly aided by superhuman speed/agility and shadow-melding. Expert tracker and hunter. Swordsman of nearly unmatched skill. Unerring accuracy.
Gear: Broadsword of the finest dwarven steel (can cut through nearly anything, glows bright green when held in combat). Crossbow, and bandolier of crossbow bolts. Variety of small knives.
History: Jayar's father was an elf, and his mother was a human. Both of them died in a battle when he was a boy. Because of his mix-breed status, he was never fully accepted in either the elven or human societies. Because of that, he took on a sort of "if nobody cares about me, then I won't care about anybody else either" attitude. He held no real alliegances to any race, and his one true joy was the adrenaline rush of hunting and fighting, so he became a mercenary. He still retains the basic moral principles instilled in him by his parents, so he never takes jobs for the 'bad guys', unless it's for the purpose of double-crossing them and taking their money.

@all Great bio's so far guys. This gives me a pretty good gauge on how strong I can make your enemies. I'll probably personally make a sword and shield warrior. Also, I forgot to add age to the template. It's not earth-shatteringly important but if you could just edit your post and put in a rough age under your gender that'd be fantastic.
@dedman probably looking for living characters if possible. Don't let that discourage you though. This is possibly a great chance for your inventive mind to not become a constant headache for me.

@nexus -6'2 is absolutely gigantic for a half-elf. -Why is he superhumanly strong? -Why can he disappear in shadows? -Why does he have a healing factor? If you really want those traits I'm honestly not greatly concerned but it's not usual for an elf/half-elf to have them. Elves are naturally good at stealth but they don't literally disappear. @all I have decided, based on the story and based on your characters bio's that the best place to base the story is the Dungeons and Dragons world of Faerun. Specifically the Dalelands. The story will begin in the town/city of Harrowdale. Where it goes from there is still an open issue. This does not imply strict accordance to Dungeons and Dragons rules, history or anything else. I still want us to be able to write our story completely free of anything else. I'm much more interested in us having a good time then keeping with some established continuity. I just think the setting itself is quite convenient for us. The area I've selected has forests, mountains, seas, everything you could want in a fantasy story really. Theres lots of small towns and a few larger cities. Enough for us to be getting along for the moment, but I have nothing against it going to the ends of the world or even to new places we decide to invent ourselves. Map here. Note: Also, keep in mind you'll get better gear along the way. This is just your starting equip. You won't be restricted to this stuff forever.

Really? Most humans are like 5'10, 5'11. Elves are more like 6'something. I figured 6'2 was kinda in between.
I thought elves had above-human physical stats in most canon.
I thought elves had a wide variety of magic at their disposal (for example: Drizzt Do'Urden's globes of darkness, faerie fire, ect). My guy, being only half-elf, can't perform magic on the same level as other elves, but healing and shadow-melding are two techniques in which he is very skilled.
Sorry about these problems. I've never made a fantasy character before.

@nexus -Ney sir, Elves are typically shorter than humans by a foot or so. -Elves are typically faster and more dextrous but not usually stronger at a base level, to my knowledge. Of course they have keener senses and typically are more intelligent (though that may be through learned experience/age). It's also possible that over hundreds of years an Elf could condition his body to be stronger than a human, but Elves are also typically thinner and don't grow bulky muscle as much as humans. -Drizzt's globe of darkness and faerie fire are both racial magic skills. All Drow can perform those feats along with a few others. Drow are actually incredibly powerful and are resistant to all magic. That in itself is huge but they also have the speed/dexterity advantage of other elves, even greater superhuman senses and powerful racial magic. Half-Elves on the other hand gain an immunity to sleep spells, low-light vision and partially enhanced perception. I've never made a fantasy character before either. I'm honestly totally fine with the abilities you've listed , as long as you said something like 'he learnt hunting techniques and some basic magic from his elvish relatives'. It'd honestly cover it, it's just not typical so I just wanted some back story on how he could do it. And I didn't want you running away with the idea that Elves can heal like Wolverine or something. I don't want to come off as fussy about rules and conventions so let me know if I am. I should have my character done soon so you can pull apart his potentially unlikely gear

My character, sirs. Name: Gareth Sigurd Race: Human Gender: Male Age: 25 Class: Warrior Alignment: Neutral Good Build: 6’1”, 180 lbs, Solid/Athletic build. Magic: N/A Skills: Journeyman Archer Journeyman Armorsmith Journeyman Tracker Journeyman Spearman Master Tactician Master Swordsman Master Shieldfighter Gear: Steel Splint Mail Armor. Tabard bearing the crest of the city guard. Steel Longsword. Steel Lance. Sigurd Heirloom Shield. (Magical, properties: reflects minor/moderate magical spells) History: Gareth grew up in the small city of Harrowdale. His father died as a war hero before his son had learnt to crawl. He had left only a shield bearing the family crest behind. When Gareth was only enough he joined the city guard and earned a name for himself for being able to solve unusual problems, along with his prodigious fighting skills and tactical acumen in skirmishes with local bandits. Gareth spent most of his childhood adventuring in the fields outside town and climbing buildings inside it. As he grew into a man he spent most of his time in the barracks training with the other guards. During peaceful times he would engage in strategy games with the Captain of the Guard, Oswald (an old war buddy of his father's). Although he is a formidable opponent with both spear and sword, ultimately his ability to out-think his opponents is his deadliest weapon.

Why no dead? Are you some sort of Lifest? Discriminating against the poor disenfranchised dead. Tsk Tsk!
I am probably going to either run a Gnome Tinkerer or some sort of Goblin Rogue, I have not decided, any preference one way or the other?

I am probably going to either run a Gnome Tinkerer or some sort of Goblin Rogue, I have not decided, any preference one way or the other? um... neither are actually acceptable races. #1 I could never figure out what a gnome is supposed to be. A non-scottish dwarf or something? confuse. #2 For the purposes of the RPG, all Goblins are evil. As are any other race that would be considered a monster usually. I guess my preference would be the Gnome, but I shudder to think of what your 'tinkering' will actually produce. I don't want to ruin anyone's fun but if you invent an airship or a block of C4 I'll literally vomit onto my keyboard. So just keep that in mind.

So are basic explosives alright? Depends what you mean... I don't think they had hand grenades in Middle-Earth. Maybe an improvised molotov cocktail or an acid flask/similar.

If you recall they did use explosives to penetrate the grate at Helms Deep

If you recall they did use explosives to penetrate the grate at Helms Deep In the movie, and the entire army of Isengard had exactly two explosives. It was hardly normal equipment. I really can't see explosives of any kind of fantasy in any other place. What sort of thing do you have in mind?

The best I could probably do is probably explosive shrapnel traps and grenades. The grenades will have to have quite a low range on the explosion (it'll be the shrapnel doing the real damage).
However you can combine magical scrolls or potions with explosives to produce elemental magic, sleeping/poison gas, etc.

I was thinking just anti-personel explosives with a trip-wire/fuse. Nothing spectacular, just powerful enough to kill a man at extremely close range. You know like set it up under a table or chair so when the target sits down or pulls the chair out it's enough to kill/seriously wound.

Gnomes are like Dwarves in that they love mining and industry but they are also like Halflings in that they love playing tricks making them like Dwarven Halflings.
No, nothing so ridiculous as an airship or C4. I was thinking something more along the lines of intricate pranks/traps with some reasonably advanced weaponry etc,. I would like to focus in springcraft for the majority of my equipment and weapons. Springs are a relatively advanced concept but are simple enough to manufacture that even fantasy blacksmiths could make them. I haven't decided if he'll mix some magic in with his technology.
