Today, at 4pm, the first official trailer for Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" was released. Starring Martin Freeman and Ian McKellen, this film will be released in December 2012 as the first of two installments of the classic JRR Tolkin tale, prequelling The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Looks like they tossed any attempt at pretending to tell us they actually want to make a hobbit movie out the window

Yeah. That didn't look very The Hobbit to me. :/
It was too dramatic looking, the tone in The Hobbit was very different from Lord of the Rings.

Exactly, not to mention half of the scenes and characters they show clearly aren't in the book

I must say, I'm very surprised that they're giving us a two and a half minute trailer a full year in advance. With most movies, we usually get a half-dozen clips and teasers before any full trailer is made.

Yeah, it's weird.
Hopefully that means this is some early stuff and they can change the movie to be more inline with the book.

Peter Jackson did an amazing job with The Lord of the Rings, but The Hobbit is a different sort of story entirely. I'm afraid that, in order to make a good movie, he'll have to deviate from the original story quite a bit more than he did with LotR.

I was actually worried about this when Jackson was announced for this project long ago.

If Peter Jackson isn't going to make an actual hobbit movie, fire him and hire someone who will.

The movie industry would rather hire a guy that will make a movie that generates money, like Jackson. Small deviations from the book can be part of that.

A complete tonal shift is not a small deviation. I'm sure this will be a nice movie, but it sure as hell won't be The Hobbit.

To be honest, I think this movie looks like it could be really good, but we'll have to approach it with the same mindset that we had to approach X-Men First Class and the Batman series. If we expect the story and the characters to be exactly the same as what we know, we'll be sorely disappointed. The Batman movies are great, but they're very little like the comic version of Batman. There's no real detective work in them. There were dozens of things that could have made me hate X-Men First Class if I had given in to my inner fanboy. But, all of those movies turned out great to watch as long as we kept in mind that they weren't supposed to be exactly like the originals. New writers and new medium of storytelling means new story.
That's basically what I think about this movie. "Peter Jackson + film" simply can not create the same product as "JRR Tolkien + book." It's a different storyteller and a different medium through which to tell it. If I watch this movie expecting it to be just like the book was, I'll hate it. If I watch this movie with the understanding it can't and won't be just like the book and is instead it's own entity, I think it will be a very good movie.

I just want the same tone. Is that really so hard to ask?
