Alright, spinning off from my comment in the "black mask" thread in the DC comics portion of our board. This thread will be dedicated on the topic of discussing real world organized crime versus comic book organized crime.
The purpose of this thread will be to pick apart pop culture myths about organized crime, discussing facts about them etc.
With this in mind, I will open the thread by saying that I have read a lot about this subject. However, my strenghts on the subjects lies with the "european/western world" organizations if you will. I am far less acquainted with asian organizations (yakuza, triad, Tongs, etc). Not that I can't speak somewhat on the topic but I am far less acquainted with them. Even more specifically I am obviously more acquainted on these topics as they pertain to Canada and some U.S cities.
To start the ball off I will start with the organized crime group most of us have likely heard most about: the mafia
by stating a fact: there is no single mafia, least of all italian

What about organized crime in comics has irked you? Many things have come and gone as far as irking me when it comes to organized crime. The biggest one is this too often seen in comics idea of crimelords and organized crime in general flaunting and acting in such a manner that they have zero subtlety. I also have a lot of peeves about comic book crime organizations where 1 uber character wields and rules over such a vast empire of crime and in such a flamboyant manner so as to make it so impossible to believe it becomes truly ridiculous when you think about it. Kingpin in his glory days is an excellent example, as was Black Mask during his time as the big boss of Gotham.

Well, to me unrealistic isn't always a problem, the problem is in the "how is it unrealistic" if you will, there is good unrealistic and bad unrealistic in my opinion.

Real organized crime is not entertaining because they don't pull off blockbuster jobs or rob armored cars. Real organized crime is rarely ever heard of in modern day society but is still festering all around us. Heck, some of Wall Street are organized criminals and they are rarely glamorous or entertaining or known. To be blunt, real organized crime is boring.

I think Batman Begins did a good job of portraying Falconi as a realistic crime boss.

To be blunt, real organized crime is boring. after having read so much on the topic. I completely disagree, it is a fascinating topic as well as great material for interesting stories. @power Nexus: Some aspects were not at all accurately portrayed, even if what they did portray made for a great movie

Fascinating is not a word that you use for entertaining things. Why do you think that Hollywood has to sexy up most stories to make them watchable?

Fascinating is not a word that you use for entertaining things. /quote] it is in my vocabulary. A great story is fascinating. Why do you think that Hollywood has to sexy up most stories to make them watchable? I contend that you wouldn't need to sexy them up to make a great movie about them.

Show me some material that you think could get made without Hollywood needing to alter them. I would be interested in seeing some.

You don't necessarily need to do it for a GOOD movie, but you kinda need to do it if you want the movie to be popular.

Show me some material that you think could get made without Hollywood needing to alter them. I would be interested in seeing some. It really depends on the kind of movie you want to tell. But you could make a great movie about the Quebec biker war that started in roughly in 1985, when the Hell's Angels made a move to take over the underboss position for the drug trade in East Canada. The first big events of the war was the infamous Lennoxville Massacre where the boss of North Chapter of the Hells Angels and his four associates were ambushed and executed by another Hell's Angels chapter for stealing profits. The 5 men were murdered then dumped in the St-Laurence river. This event caused a heavy divide in the criminal underworld as a former Hell's Angel affiliate Boss, Salvatore Cazetta broke off from the hell's Angels and formed the Rock Machines by unifiying the smaller gangs resisting the invading Hells Angels. Long story short, the Hells Angel turned to the most brutal and violent tactics they could get away with including bombings, outright public murders, you name. in turn, the small gangs that were trying to resist being absorbed into them formed into a alliance called the Rock machine and decided to fight back in turn. As the war escalated, over 150 people were murdered in the gang war, that culminated with a bombing that killed an 11 year old boy. Eventually public outcry resulted in massive police retaliation that led to the arrest and conviction of over 159 biker gang members and the ensuing problems It also led into operation Colisee and operation Sharqc
