Warner Bros. and Legendary pictures made the announcement today that General Zod has indeed been cast for Zack Snyder's "Superman: Man of Steel." The actor to play Zod is the Academy Award Nominated Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road, Boardwalk Empire). Zack Snyder shares his thoughts on General Zod and on Michael Shannon portraying him: As General Zod, Shannon will go toe-to-toe with Henry Cavill, who plays the new Clark Kent/Superman in the film. The main cast also includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent. Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers. Superman: Man of Steel is set to be released by Warner Bros. in late 2012.

I really enjoy Zod's character, glad to hear he'll be included in the film. I haven't seen any films with the actor that will portray him, though.

Even though I'm not a big supes fan, I would have liked to see a villain who hasn't already been featured.

I was hoping for Brainiac but Zod works.

What do you all think of Michael Shannon as Zod? Good fit? I have to say, after watching him in Boardwalk Empire, he is a fantastic actor.

I sure hope that Lex is not going to be the clown he was in the first two films.

@ Phantom - Do you think Brainiac could have worked had they gone for the Johns/Frank revamped version, and if they had followed that particular story? It was pretty cinematic in scope and execution (despite lacking a strong ending).

It was pretty cinematic in scope and execution (despite lacking a strong ending). I don't think they could adapt the actual story given that the story is basically just a set up for a greater event later on. But the concept of Brainac which Johns and Frank brought back, that of an ancient alien being which hoards knowledge of the universe and steals entire cities for his collection as representatives of their civilization is a cool one, and it certainly present a big enough threat for Superman. The problem that the first films shouldn't do that. The first film should be about establishing Superman's place on Earth, and that automatically goes out the window when you have a giant space threat, whether it be Brainiac or Zod or Doomsday or Darkseid (which is still not gonna happen, BTW). That means Superman being on Earth solving Earth based problems. That doesn't mean he can't go around kicking ass of a giant metal Godzilla or an army of robot insects like people assume, but it means the main villain, the one who drives the plot, should be Earth based. Putting Zod in instantly screams OMG KRYPTON!!! Let's marvel in its beauty and magic and power and the fact that they can kill us all by shrugging too hard. And that will inevitably put the most important aspect of Superman's character (The human aspect) into the backseat.

I concur it would preferable to see Brainiac with the plot from Action Comics in a sequel rather than the original.
As for Zod, I agree his inclusion to a first film is rather odd, but I'd like to hear more about the length and the scope of his appearance.

[/i][/quote] True, I guess I'm leaping before looking a bit here, but still, I can't see him in any role other than main villain/co-villain. He could just be there for a cameo and foreshadow, but that would be rehashing the original Superman, and I really hope they're not that desperate.

But I've been thinking about rewatching it. Should tie-in well with me reading 40 Superman issues per day.

LOL Oh you know, the beginning on Krypton where Marlon Brando imprisons Zod 'n' co to the phantom zone window and Zod swears Jor-El and Jor-El's children will kneel before him?

IIRC, Brando got payed around 10 million dollars for 10 minutes on screen. Talk about a bargain.
