Pretty simple, what does it take for you to try a new series?

Great art is my most powerful hook next to characters I love. So when it has both it is a must have.
I never bother reading about what story will be coming up or who will be featured in Y-title doing X-thing or fighting Z-character.

Sometimes, all it takes is the cover art.

Art is a must. Interesting character I either previously had no knowledge of, or saw in some guest appearances a few times and was bad ass.

Money
And time to go to the comic shop
Artwork is a major deal for me too. I can't enjoy comics that have crappy artwork.

Art is irrelevant, what decides if you got me or not is when I start reading the first issue. If you don't get me interested in reading issue 2 you're screwed.

Writer and character('s) most commonly. I'll definitely try reading something with character's I wouldn't normally if I like the writer. Art can definitely hinder my enjoyment of a title, but I can't say that it's really any part of my decision on what to read or not read.

If I don't like the art, then I'm probably not going to read it. That being said, I generally like the look of most comics I've seen, so it mainly comes down to the writing and if I find the concept interesting. You're comic can be the most beautiful around but if the premise doesn't appeal to me, I'm not reading it.

I will usually give a new series a couple of issues to prove itself. Strong writing and good art are definitely a big plus in a series continuation. If the writing's good enough, I'll stick with a series unless the artwork is so hideously bad (there are a few "star artists" out there that are book killers for me). Likewise, you can have fabulous artwork, but it the story is not compelling, I'm not going to bother reading it.
I apply the same standards to any book, which is why I'll add and drop titles as story and art improve or decline.

If I had a previous interest in the characters, the writers, or have had positive feedback from a reliabe source, I will read a book.
Art can kill a book for me as well.

Generally because i like one or more of the characters. As a rule unless the art is absolutely atrocious, it wont make me give up on a title, but really good Cover art has made me buy a title from time to time. Sticking with the title depends on the Character and the writing. Having said all that I have followed the work of Roy Thomas, John Ostrander, Frank Miller, Paul Kupperburg, Dennis O'Neil, J M Dematteis and Marv Wolfman through several series. I'll usually give anything written by these guy's a try.
Generally, the way i get into new characters is after I've seen them in the series of Characters I like (yeah the "guest star' or cross over hits the target for me- a born sucker)
