I've never done a movie review so I figured I'd give it a shot.
Starring:
James Franco as Will Rodman
John Lithgow as Charles Rodman
Daivd Oyelowo as Steven Jacobs
Will Rodman is a scientist at GEN-SYS where he's trying to develop a cure for Alzheimer's. This is near and dear to him due to the fact that his father is suffering from the disease. They've been conducting tests on chimpanzees and seeing positive results. The test chimpanzee, named Bright-Eyes in a nod to the classic films has gained a near human level of intelligence. Rodman is set for a presentation with some investors when Bright Eyes suddenly goes crazy and unfortunately has to be gunned down by security guards.
Rodman's superior, Mr. Jacobs believe her acts to be a result of the drug testing and orders the chimpanzees to be put down. Rodman and one of his co-workers then discover the real reason Bright Eyes went ballistic. She was pregnant and protecting her baby. Rodman and his co-worker can't being themselves to kill the baby chimp so Rodman takes him home to raise.
Three years later and the young chimp named Casear has inherited his mother's superior intelligence. He is using sing language, acing tests and showing himself to be the equal of humans his own age. Rodman then decides to test the drug on his father and all signs point to it working. However, his condition later worsens. Due to his Alzherimer's he stumbles into the street and begins playing in a neighbor's car. He backs it into another couple of parked cars and the neighbor begins berating him. Witnessing this from the attic, Caesar leaps to his defense and begins savagely beating the neighbor.
Caesar is then assigned to a primate captivity center and doesn't acclimate well at first with the other chimps. As Caesar adjusts to his new surroundings Will Rodman has begun working on a new strain of the cure. His father also passes away leaving him without his father and Caesar in his life for the first time in quite awhile.
Back at the primate center, Caesar is adjusting to his fellow chimps, an orangutan and the facility's gorilla. He is also contantly abused by the proprietor of the facility's son. Caesar receives advice from the orangutan, who like himself is proficient in sign language. He also keeps seeing a tag for the GEN-SYS corporation which serves as a constant reminder of where his friend Will works.
Eventually, Caesar escapes and steals the new strain of the cure from GEN-SYS. This enhances the intelligence of his fellow apes and they escape the facility. They storm the city and add other apes from local zoos to their ranks. This leads to a dramatic showdown on the Golden Gate Bridge with local law enforcement. Eventually Caesar and his army make their way to a nearby Redwood forest that Caesar had visisted as a young ape with Will.
Thoughts:
This is a very fun movie and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are 3-4 moments that are subtle nods to the classic films. The cast isn't great but they do a serviceable job. It definitely has some moments where you'll have to suspend some disbelief. All in all, I'd recommend it if you're a fan of the original movies or sci-fi in general.
7/10
